Basically it's a tone ring that raises the head a short distance in from the tension hoop. Results in a brighter sound.

I like the finger plant wear marks on the archtop. Picking so close to the bridge that teh fingers are behind it!

That's tearing it up!

If you see live, or videos, of Dr. Ralph Stanley, He plays them. And I love mine too.

Archtop fans abound on BHO but others prefer flatheads. Its all about what your ears like. FWIW I like them both and have both.

wow! thank you so much! fascinating. is it the tone ring that actually pushes the head up or do you have to buy a head that specifically matches an archtop tone ring? (I hope this question makes sense) . What kind of banjos are offered by the manufacturer with an archtop tone ring? any gibson models come with an archtop as standard?

No, same head for both tonering types, either mylar/plastic or skin. Plastic heads: archtops want low or medium crown, flatheads medium or high crown, in rare cases low-crown too.

Mike, you always make my day. Were you always this clever, or did it come with advanced age?

I was a small child in a large family.
Two major options:
Be outstanding, or go unnoticed.
Humor gets positive attention, whereas whining and tantrums (back in the unEnlightend 1950's) would draw down physical punishment.
