Clearly Charlie Lowe was playing Round Peak style early on, and Red Graham of the Red-Headed fiddlers recorded some "follow the fiddle" banjo in the 20s. But what other clawhammer of that type do we have record of prior to the 1950s?

J.P. Nestor,
Clarence Ashley (who did a rasqueado but did not brush)
Buell Kazee,
Thaddius Willingham "I Truly Understand"
Uncle Dave Macon

Many players who were recorded in the 50s and 60s or who were recorded for the LOC and were only made available later, learned before the folk revival.
Wade Ward
Hobart Smith
etc.
