Jezebel, my lovely basset hound died last Thursday. She didn't play the banjo, but she often accompanied us to old time dances and festivals and occasionally sang vocals.
I already miss her desperatley--she was the best dog we ever had.
I know many in the banjo and dulcimer community knew and loved her and just wanted to let you know that she is gone.

Best wishes,
Mary Z. Cox

I'm so sad and sorry.

It is evident from your many posts mentioning Jezebel that she was a wonderful companion and muse. You were truly blessed and I'm sure will continue to be by her memory.

Hi Mary,

My heart goes out to you. I lost a very dear feline friend in late May and still find myself teary-eyed about it sometimes. I don't know, perhaps as we get older we get closer to our pets...

Whatever the case, I'm very sorry for your loss and hope that memories of the good times take over soon. They do help.

Best,

A big hug to you Mary. Losing a dog is losing a family member and it is one of the worst things I know of. I'll be thinking of you lots over the next few weeks. I'm very sorry Sweetie.

So sorry to hear about your loss Mary. We can relate as we just lost Fergus our old pal of almost 16 years just 2 weeks ago as well. (He's to the left in my avatar).
All the best,

Really, really sorry to hear that Mary. A beloved pet's death is so very painful and a lot of people (if they aren't animal lovers) just don't understand the depth of grief there can be. But I still believe that it's better to have loved and lost, as they say, than never loved at all....

Big hugs to you and yours.

Sorry for the loss of Jezebel. I've had a number of bassets in my life. And sorry to hear about Fergus too. I'd bet that a couple of dogs out there are going to have really great homes soon.

Mary, I'm Sorry for your loss. dogs, especially the elder ones, become so dear to one, especially if they are already beloved.

Jezebel, fly with voices of angels to your rest.

Our dog (a dachsund mini) is sixteen, deaf as a post, blind as a bat, and still thinks he's a puppy -- For about five minutes at a time. We love him, but know that he does not have long.

Cherish 'em while they're here, let 'em go when they pass on.

We'll try to do so too.

Hello,
I think Jez's best musical story is one evening we were playing for the old time dance in Tallahassee at the Miccosukkee Land Co-op and she was lying there on stage half asleep, got up suddenly in the middle of a tune--walked over to the mic and knocked me and my banjo out of the way and began baying into the mic like a vocalist. At the end of the tune, the dancers gave her a big ovation and she went back over and laid done again.

But here's the News!

We are getting a puppy! My daughter, Natalie, and me called a breeder in middle Mississippi (which is only about 5-6 hours away) and put a deposit on a 2-week old male puppy.

It is close enough that we will be able to go and pick him up in September when he is old enough.
He won't look anything like Jez and we liked the photo of his Dad--who we suspect he will look a lot like.

This is very exciting and think everyone around here will stop crying and be getting ready for the new pup.
Best wishes,
Mary Z. Cox

Actually as much as I'd be honored to name him after you--my daughter, Natalie is insisting that he be named "Elvis". Especially since he is coming from Mississippi.
She is pushing real hard for us to get a female too and name her Priscilla.
I have been undecided because although it would be good for a puppy to have company, and don't think it would be any harder to train two than one--but it is twice as expensive--and more difficult to travel with two big dogs than one.
However, Bob is locked in his room and keeps screaming there will not be two dogs and that we have betrayed him by even thinking that thought. Good grief!
My guess is that Elvis will be an only boy.
However, at least everyone at my home has quit crying as the anticipation of the new pup is very exciting. :)
Best wishes,
Mary Z

Bob (Mr. We are never getting another dog) sent out email announcements to his co workers of the upcoming arrival of young Elvis--and his new puppy has already been invited to visit his office as soon as he arrives in Tallahassee.

One nice positive is that the new pup will be exposed to music from the beginning and may take an interest. Jezebel was never particularly interested in music.

Congratulations! There is nothing quite like having a new puppy in the house to set things right. You can't replace one dog with another, but you certainly can add to the accumulation of joy in your life.

rendesvous1840 - Posted - 08/14/2008:  12:02:16

That was a good dog story. I just knew there were some "Doggy Tails" waiting to be wagged. Good to hear about the new pup, also. Just watch him around those skin-head banjos- he might think rawhide is for chewing! We had a pup many years ago that ate several shoes, a guitar strap, and the tolex covering on a guitar case. We kept a supply of familly-aproved rawhide chews on hand for many years for the next two dogs.

Thanks everyone for all your kind words and interest.
Yes Jessy--I'll put up more pix as soon as they put them up.
The ones up now are of him at 2 weeks just after his eyes opened.
Until then--please take a look and listen to this short video called
"A basset is an asset. " Love the music too.
