The next 2 weekends are going to be good for us here in Vermont. The first you all probably know about: the Champlain Valley Folk Festival ( http://www.cvfest.org/ ) is on August 1-3. A lot of different folk musics, but for old-time Dan Gellert at least will be there. Casey and I will be playing too.
The following weekend, 8-10 of August, Mark Sustic has organized an old-time get-together up near Jeffersonville for those of us who can't make it down to the big festivals. The only cost is for camping fees and a BBQ that's been organized. If you're interested, email me and I'll forward you Mark's email about it. Here's a link for the campsite it's being held at: http://www.brewsterrivercampground.com/
Hope to see some of you there!

Sounds like a good time. I'd be there except I'll be down the road in Killington at the Pipers' Gathering playing smallpipes and border pipes- the pipers' equivalent of Oldtime& clawhammer, I suppose. Have a great time.

Now that sounds like a lot of fun too, I always wanted to play the pipes.
Here's a "card" with some more information about the Old-Time Weekend:

Hey! The Old Time Weekend is going to feature the premiere of a great new movie/documentary about Old Time Music called Music for the Sky. Many of the great players who grace this great movie about NE old time players will be there and it will be great chance for folks from New England to connect with the old time scene featured in the movie.
Can't wait!!

Never had the opportunity to visit New England unless you consider Boston as a part of New England. When I think New England I think Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and I guess maybe some parts of Massachusetts. You know "Chestnuts roasting by and open fire, Jack Frost nipping at you nose. Yule time carols being sung by a choir......etc."
What's the old time music scene like in New England? Just curious.

The old-time scene is pretty small and quiet up here in Vermont as far as I can tell. There are a few good players I've met and hopefully this gathering will bring more out of the woodwork. Apparently Pete Sutherland and John Specker will be there. I've met Pete a couple of times, including this past weekend at the Folk Festival, but didn't get a chance to hear Specker play. Dan Gellert had a little banjo showcase which was a pleasure to see - he's a great player.

Hunter,
Great idea. Wish you guys luck. My hat's off to you for helping promote it. Hope a bunch show up. Oh yeah, one of my current favorite groups is from New England - Crooked Still. Discovered them a couple of years ago, then had a chance to see 'em live at MerleFest in 2007.

I'll be in Vermont (Burlington area, mostly) August 17-20, or so. Anything to look for during that time?

Sounds great! I just came back from the Champlain Valley Festival and had a wonderful time (except for some torrential rain which turned the parking into a swamp, requiring tractors to haul out some of our cars).
Dan Gellert and his wife did some really good sets in their sessions. Because of the weather, Dan was concerned about having problems with his skin-head banjo, so I lent him mine, which has a Renaissance head. Besides being my number one favorite performing instrument, my banjo has now been used by Dan Gellert, Adam Hurt and Pete Sutherland.
Lots of luck on your event!
Alan

Nothing I've heard of Rick, if I hear of anything before then I'll put it up here. If you happen to arrive a day early, my buddy Casey and I are playing at the Farmer's Market on Sat. the 16th.
Alan, wish we'd run into you. I didn't get the chance to hear Dan with his wife, just the banjo universe thing on Saturday.
That was some rain wasn't it?!
