BANJOJUDY - Posted - 06/23/2008:  05:59:19

At our recent Mary z. Cox banjo workshop, we had such a terrific time that those attending decided a monthly get together (I do call this the Banjo Support Group) to discuss all things clawhammer and more.

For the first meeting, which I will host(ess), there will be a movie showing with popcorn, beer, and soda (for those who call soda "pop", that too).

I already know which movie will be shown, but I am holding a contest (without a prize for the winner - just an ego booster) - what movie will it be?

Judy

PS: I'm getting into the YOUTUBE stuff - see the links on my homepage.

My husband made the mistake of musing to me that
the new necklace we were contemplating purchasing
was more than a new banjo would cost. I got the Chuck
Lee Vintage Prairieville banjo and he didn''t get a new
necklace!

This is a great topic to move to the new forum.

Songcatcher would be nice, aka Oh Sister, Where Art Thou.

I reckon you've got that Dwight Diller flick in mind. Am I right?

I'm betting on DD.

Songcatcher is based on the true story of Olive Dame Campbell and her establishing of the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C. Oh Brother was entirely fiction :-) David Brose, the folklorist at the school was one of the tech advisors for the film.

I'll take a stab at " legends of old time music". at least that's what movie I wish I was watching.

banjo_brad - Posted - 06/23/2008:  14:20:45

I'd go for "The Fifth String", i.e. "That Dwight Diller movie.

I'm guessing A Banjo Frolic. It goes great with popcorn.

We're leaving Wednesday morning and won't be back until Sunday. Pleas don't make me wait 'till Sunday for the answer to this important question ;-)

If you are correct, I will send you an "ego builder" email so you won't be too occupied while on vacation, Chip.

I just happened to watch Coal Miner's Daughter last night for the first time in several years. It has some very authentic string band music with camera close ups of the banjo player's clawhammer hand at work. I'm not putting my money on that being the movie you have planned. But it is a point of interest to any of you clawhammer players who have wondered if they'd enjoy that movie.

A Mighty Wind ?

My guess is A Simple Twist of Fate, although it has only a brief snippet of Steve Martin's character playing clawhammer.

J-Walk - Posted - 06/23/2008:  18:23:41

I've got it!

The movie is "Battlestar Earth"-- in honor of the Deering Banjo Company.

Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman doing Plastic Jesus clawhammer style? Probably not, but I saw it recently (right after I'd taken up clawhammer) and it was very cool.

This was one very fun group of folks.
Not only did we have a good time--they were musical geniuses too.
Judy and Michael are fabulous workshop hosts too--it was an honor and privlege to stay with them and we miss them already.

Best wishes always,
Mary Z. Cox

If you suspect you need a new banjo--you do. Trust your musical instincts. If a banjo calls to you to buy it, don''t fight destiny. It was meant to be. :)

The group at the workshop was a lot of fun, and yes, the musicians were amazing. We had lots of levels - from pretty new to clawhammer to very experienced. It was amazing how we all had a good time and were able to play the same tunes.

I am slowly uploading videos of our weekend with you in Albuquerque. ANyone interested can find them on YOUTUBE by searching for BANJOJUDY. At the moment 3 are visible.

It takes a long time to upload one large AVI file - I hope all who view them will rate the movies with lots of stars.
