Thanks must go to Mike Stangland for his great guitar tab (also included here), from which the banjo tab has been created. I have put the key as Bb (Capo III - G shapes), as it is in this key that Bryan Sutton plays it and Stuart Duncan appears to cope ok on the fiddle! I hope you enjoy it. |

The first break is similar to what Bill Keith, Eric Weissberg, and others played in the 1960s and contains that OJC run useful in so many tunes. The second break is more the way I play it today, with lots of drive coming from forward rolls (in Bill Keith's terminology; I used to call it "walking up the strings"). Either version is worth adding to your arsenal. |

I wonder whether Monroe wrote it with the idea that it would be a showcase for Earl Scruggs and his "fancy banjo." This is my arrangement of the song. The first break sticks closely to the melody, but employs a melodic G-D-G turnaround in the last measures that I use a lot in my playing. The second break features some interesting melodic bits, includes a high part that I really like, and ends with a turnaround that, to me at least, sounds a bit like Alan Munde's playing. |

The only recorded version I know of is Earl Taylor's, although there is a concert tape floating around of J. D. Crowe playing the song. It should be played at a moderate tempo, which facilitates playing the final measures in the second break, where I have indicated the right hand fingering. The blues run involves several notes played sequentially with the thumb. If you can't do this, alternate thumb and index finger. |
