Longford, Ireland

2 September 2016

Starting this September Longford resident, 5-string banjoist and songwriter Tom Hanway brings weekly bluegrass, singers and their songs to counties Longford and Leitrim. Through his four tune collections with Mel Bay Publications, Tom champions Irish and Celtic fingerstyle banjo worldwide, which has legions of fans and students in both hemispheres and both sides of the Atlantic. Tom is also a guitar player and since moving to Ireland from New York City in 2003, he has been busy writing songs that cut across genres and age groups.

First, at the Longford Arms Hotel, Front Lounge, Tom sings brother-duets with Joe Meehan as The Jalapeño Brothers, playing bluegrass, old-timey, country, folk-rock and cowboy songs. Joe is from Mullingar and doubles on mandolin and guitar and, by the way, he was Joe Dolan’s guitarist for two decades.

The Jalapeño Brothers kick off at 9 pm sharp every Thursday at the Longford Arms’ Front Lounge. They take requests and are comfortable doing songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash.

Today’s show features a gifted and prolific Irish songwriter, Tony Fahy, who heads the Charley Farrelly Folk Club at Charley Farrelly's Bar, Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim

Tony is the featured artist for “CBGBs Night: Singers and Their Songs” next Wednesday at Cryan’s Bar in Carrick On Shannon at 9 pm sharp. That’s on the 7th of September, and the following Wednesday features songwriter Colin Beggan. Singer-songwriter John Costello and other Irish songwriters will also be appearing at Cryan’s on Wednesday nights, so stay tuned each week here on the Saturday Connection on Shannonside.

“CBGBs Night: Singers and Their Songs” is held every Wednesday night at Cryan’s Bar in Carrick On Shannon, Co. Leitrim, and these are free small concerts featuring a different Irish singer and songwriter each week. It’s an early start, 9 pm, so please come early and sit up close to the action.

Bluegrass Nights with The Jalapeño Brothers in Longford town also begin at 9 pm sharp in the Front Lounge of the Longford Arms Hotel, every Thursday night, featuring Tom Hanway and Joe Meehan, who are some of the best bluegrass pickers this side of Nashville, singing brother-style duets.

Also joining us is gorgeous singer Claire Glynn, who had her second baby boy just three weeks ago!

Cheers Tom for inviting me and thanks Charlie McGettigan for making us all feel very relaxed! Dara was delighted he got to hear his Mammy on the radio! Now back to nursing Conor!"

We had a ball; much thanks to Charlie McGettigan for playing guitar and hosting us on radio, and now the show begins!
