If you're in to the Grateful Dead at all, check out the band The Grass Is Dead. Just found out about this band today and I'm really digging them! They do some really cool bluegrass dead songs. Check out Brown Eyed Women. The You can listen to one of their live shows here...

Hey Spencer... yeah... never a "Dead Head"... but enjoy many tunes they did and absolutely loved the sessions between David Grisman (mandolin legend) and Jerry Garcia.... so the bluegrass/traditional link has always been there. Really liked Peggy-O, Wind and Rain and the syncopated Playing in the Band. Brown-Eyed Women had a Dylan-esque feel... with good instrumental breaks... some real tasty fare indeed.
If you haven't heard Shady Grove on the YouTube by Garcia & Grisman... get on it pronto... one of my all-time fav's.
Oh... listened to a bit more and gotta say any band that covers Donna The Buffalo is tight with me... did a great job on Conscious Evolution... Jeb (Purview) and Tara (Nevins) would absolutely approve! On the other hand, i was reminded how strong a group Hot RiZe was in their attempt to cover "High on a Mountain"... no one can sing it like Tim O'Brien or pick it like Pete "Dr. Banjo" Wernick. Okay... done here.

Kenny,
I saw David Grisman and his bluegrass band on Friday at a very small venue in Salt Lake. It was very awesome! They played into open mics which I thought was really cool. Funny little side note...I always thought David Grisman would be a really funny person because of the way he looks and how he moves his head when he plays. He about put us to sleep when he talked between songs haha! I actually thought he was going to take a little snoozer while on stage. We were there for the music though which was fantastic!
I need to start listening to Hot Rize. I hear alot about them but haven't checked them out yet for some reason. Think I'll get on that today! |

Callin' ya "Spencey" cuz' nobody ever calls me "Kenny" (LOL). Yeah... Hot RiZE is definitely worth a listen. Tim O'Brien is ridiculously talented and Pete Wernick is rock-solid (tasteful, not flashy) on the Mastertone. I just listened to Grisman/Garcia do (Dreadful) Wind and Rain again... as well as some Grateful Dead versions of Peggy-O.... love it. Thanks again for posting a link to this cool band that knows good music and does it justice. Best Regards... could see you playing in a band like this one day... and i ain't kiddin' man. Ken. |

Thanks KEN!
Being a Peggy-O fan, you should check out the version from The Grateful Dead's Dicks Pick's Vol. 20.
