I'd like to get responses without telling you what the banjos are first. (If you're curious you can probably figure it out by looking at my profile, but PLEASE VOTE FIRST, so as not to influence your objective opinion.)
Later I'll post what the banjos are. Again, I'd like objective opinions, so please do not post guesses!
Thanks!
I like the second one better. Why? Because it sounds a little crisper. The first one reminds me of my Helix which I love. It was just a tad mellower.

I would say that these "two banjos",on the spectrum of banjo tones, are VERY close together!
In fact I think they are the same banjo! Sample One is with a small, interior mute that stops some of the "echo can" type of sound.
The second sample is with no mute at all. I do prefer the first.
I will do anything for tone and I fool around with mutes a lot, from Grover Multi-tones to small foam blocks to rolled up fabric (harder or looser rolling makes a big difference!).
I have even mounted pie plates on the dowel stick for a touch more resonance--funny how my tummy absorbs sound--whoulda thunk it? ;-)

Pretty close. But number 1 gets the vote. Just a bit fuller, and i always go for the richer sound in the lower register. |

A lifetime of listening and purchasing philosophy summed up in a single sentence. Although, along with the richer lower register, I might add balance, clarity and intonation in all positions.

I like #2, the crisp sound is nice, I also like #1 its a little more earthy. I cant say that i like one better than the other because i like them both. |

#1 unless you need to cut through a lot of noise or other instruments. Almost sounds like the same banjo with different head tensions.

Sorry, you're sort of backwards.
#1 is a Gold Tone WL-250. #2 is a Gold Tone CC-OT muffled with a foam wad under the head. The CC-OT sounds a lot more like an echo can than the WL-250 without that wad.
