More About Me
Lessons are normally set to be 1HR per week with my homemade rhythm trx and an audio file entailing the lesson content included so your actually gettin about 1.5 hrs total...Ive been a local teacher here in Charleston WV. for 18 yrs teaching both Scruggs and Melodic styles...My teaching style has been greatly influenced by attending week long workshops/camps for 20yrs givin by world reknowned masters Bill Keith, Bill Evans,Pete Wernick, James Mc Kinney,Scott Vestal, Charlie Cushman and many of their guests.I DO NOT use TAB and have kind of a "Phonetic"(Hooked on Phonics/Rosetta Stone)) way of teaching Ive developed over the last 10yrs which I feel allows students to advance much quicker retaining more of what they've internalized (not memorized) longer. More like "speaking banjo"using phrasology.I did a BHO workshop last yr "Anatomy of a Banjo Break" depicting this method....Im convinced now , after seeing /hearing PROOF, if the "right tunes" are learned in the "right order", this sets the stage retaining their melodys in a more natural way rather than memorizing strings, frets, and fingers and chord shapes..WAIST OF TIME!..I HAD to find a better way after watchin so many people SUFFER 94-2000.. All I was doing was mirroring alotta of other methods that WERE NOT WORKING.. So, if your not progressing with all the Left Brain methods, give me a chance to change your perception of what should be going on in the brain... No two player's auditory and/ or physical skills are the same so why should your learning be a cookie cutter method or constrained within the walls of current instrument instruction thinking? Im set up with Webcam for SKYPE.Those interested and wanting more details can E mail me at kidbjo@gmail.com (DONT trust the PM here) or sign up with SKYPE and add me "johnkuhnmusic" (link is on my page) and leave an IM message or call me there, OR call me by phone 304-343-5839. For reference to my playing, please check out my videos and sound files to give you an idea of the styles and genres of music I cover.

Always around, Always willing to take time to assist new players, do collaborations and give honest feedback he is part of the dream team of teachers on this site! - DGEBanjo
I could not agree more! He doesn't just play music-he obviously feels it. KIDD is the Man! He has helped me on my banjo journey for over a year now. - picKen
John is a good friend and we have had many discussions about teaching. I know him to be among the most dedicated at teaching in the country. He has a teaching philosophy based on years of playing professionally as a touring musician. He knows what it takes to reach certain levels and knows the ear skills it takes to get there. John also cares about seeing his students progress and its not a 'canned' approach. Im proud to recommend him as an instructor. - Banjophobic
I have collaborated many times with The KIDD over the years. Two of the most important attributes of a good teacher are patience and a willingness to communicate: John has boatloads of both! Great player too - he will inspire you. Highly recommended! - Laurence Diehl
I have taken lessons with John and found him to have more passion for the banjo and his music than any person I have ever met. He has developed a teaching style that works and you will get what you pay for with John for sure. His devotion to his students is second to none and I would recommend John to anyone. - dgill
John, (the kidd) is an outstanding teacher who is concerned that you learn the music by using your ear (hearing the music) and not by memorizing tab. He always has time for his students and is very patience. Skype allows you to take lessons with a great teacher and never leave home. Highly recommend.
