George may have preferred the guitar or the ukelele, however, I have just uploaded my arrangement for the banjo to the BHO tab library.

I started this arrangement in the middle of the night weeks ago and stopped cold in the middle of it.

While I was posting previous releases a little while ago, I saw the file sitting there....the motivation hit me and, Voila! Here it is!

It's now uploaded.

This arrangement was previously released on the BHO some time ago.

It includes the melody as executed in a Scruggs fashion with the lyrics in the key of G.

I previously released this on the BHO....It's been awhile.

This rendition does not contain the 'banjo riff' that was played in the original Neil Young version...but the melody, character and lyrics are here in my arrangement.

I've always wondered who it was that played the banjo on Young's recording...anybody know?

Amazing Grace

I'm not what one would call a religious guy, but Amazing Grace is my favorite song. It's just so beautiful to my ear. I've recently taken up clawhammer, but I still play Amazing Grace every day in a bluegrass, waltz time style to start my day off right. I'm having difficulty transferring the melody to clawhammer because, basically, I learned Amazing Grace years ago from a Janet Davis book; it has a lot of (really nice) slides, hammer-ons, etc., but they make it even harder for me to transpose to frailing. Does anyone have a beginner or intermediate Amazing Grace tab for clawhammer? Preferably beginner, but I can make do with intermediate as well. I'm afraid my ear simply isn't good enough to pull the melody out by ear, so even just a four beat, melody-only tab would work as well and then I can add embellishments as I get better (fingers crossed!).

Thanks,
billyshake

Waltzing Mathilda: Austrailian Bush Ballad

Uploaded to the BHO tab section....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwvazMc5EfE

I submit this one in the memory and honor of my late grandmother Rose "Mathilda" Drake. (Grandma's been gone since the 70s)....

Scruggs style....

From Wikipedia.....

"Waltzing Matilda" is Australia's most widely known bush ballad, a country folk song, and has been referred to as "the unofficial national anthem of Australia".[1] The title is Australian slang for travelling by foot with one's goods in a "Matilda" (bag) slung over one's back.[2]

The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker or Swagman making a drink of tea at a bush camp and capturing a sheep to eat. When the sheep's ostensible owner arrives with three police officers to arrest the worker for the alleged theft (a crime punishable by hanging), the worker drowns himself in a small watering hole and goes on to haunt the site.

The original lyrics were written in 1887 by poet and nationalist Banjo Paterson. It was first published as sheet music in 1903. Extensive folklore surrounds the song and the process of its creation, to the extent that the song has its own museum, the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Queensland.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Lyrics:
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,
Down came the troopers, one, two, three,
"Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?"
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"
"Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?",
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong,
"You'll never catch me alive", said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me."
"Oh, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me."

Takin' Care of Business: Bachmann-Turner...

I just uploaded my 'guitar-only' arrangement of this old classic to the tab section of the
"Flatpicker's Hangout".

Hopefully they and you won't be offended by such music...

It is offered up in the spirit of "Hayseed Dixie", although I don't have any recordings of them doing that tune.

Things seem to move a whole lot slower on the FPHO, so I made mention of the upload over here, where there might be some guitar players hanging around.

I did the arrangement for a young student of mine who tries to impress me by totally memorizing at least one piece of music that I had presented to him the week before.

He does it almost every week!

It's mighty impressive for anyone to do that...this young fellow is 10 years old!

He might be the next Ricky Skaggs for all I know...

In the teaching business at the local music store level, you don't see that kind of commitment often....

At any rate, enough ranting from me...

Corn Bread and Butter Beans (clawhammer)

I'm looking for clawhammer tab for "Corn Bread and Butter Beans". I know the song from the recent Carolina Chocolate Drops CD - they play it in "G" I believe, but any version would work. If there is no tab for it floating around, I'd settle for standard notation, which I could use to figure out the melody. I should probably be able to figure it out by ear, but I'm a beginner and that is still extremely difficult for me.

Hi everybody. I';m trying to learn a new tune called Highway 40 Blues. Does anyone have tab for it? Or, maybe help me figure out the chord progression. The recording I have is in the key of E. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

I am glad I am not a turkey...

My daughter had a kindergarten song that we jokingly sing every Thanksgiving since then:
Oh, I’m glad I’m not a turkey
A turkey, a turkey
Oh, I’m glad I’m not a turkey
On Thanksgiving Day
They’ll stuff you and baste you
And then they will taste you.
Oh, I’m glad I’m not a turkey
On Thanksgiving Day

This year I would like to play the banjo along, but I can't find any music. Any help?

Thanks in advance...

Southern Comfort, C tuning

I am exploring C tuning a bit, and have been working on Southern Comfort, in what I hope is the tuning that Sammy Shelor uses- tune the 4th string to C and capoed at the second fret. I pretty much have it worked out except the intro, does anyone have an idea what he's doing there?
Also, other songs in C tuning that are good since I'm in that tuning anyway?
Thanks!

I've been trying to work out how to play this Scott Joplin favorite for quite a while now, but can't get it to sound right. I got the melody but can't fill it out. Anybody got a version of this? 'Preciate it.

Black Mountain Rag out of C...?

There's plenty of tabs for this song out of the G position, but my band goes back and forth between G and C with it. I've got one decent break out of C but I need some ideas for a second one... if anyone has tab for it they'd like to share, I'd be really grateful.

You never want to need a tune like this...but if it happens...

It's now uploaded to the BHO tab section.

A month or two ago, a young man got asked to play it for a vet friend of his...still alive, thankfully...and I did this arrangement for him.
