playing into a SM57 on stage

What is the best way to position a SM57 mic for playing live on stage (standing up)?

It needs to be close enough to the banjo to be heard, pick up good tone, and yet out of the way so that it doesn't interfere with the right hand. How do you position yours? Pictures would be good!

Can anyone suitable recommend amplification of the banjo?

I play in a band with drums so mic'ing up the banjo is difficult. When it's loud enough to be heard over the drums it starts feeding back. Any solutions?

Band In A Box Question - Save as MP3

Is there a way to save a Band In A Box arrangement as MP3? I have real tracks/real bands (whatever its called) and am not using MIDI.

I can see how to save an arrangement as midi but can't figure out how to export as MP3?

	Anyone know?

Resonator flange holes and mics

I've been mic'ing my banjo for years and like the sweet spot just below and behind the bridge.

But... my question is why doesn't it work well to focus the mic on the resonator flange holes? How many hundreds of times have we read on the BHO that the resonator is for increasing the volume and redirecting it forward. This would lead one to think that massive quantities of intense sound waves should be pouring forth from the flange holes. But I just can't seem to find them with a microphone.

I have half a mind to hypothesize that the resonator is recycling the sound waves and sending them back to the head, making the head vibrate harder and therefore louder, and that the holes in the flange are pretty much esthetics. Anyone with me on this?

combo preamp/volume boost

Are there any preamps available that would have a built-in volume boost button or pedal? I've been using this box that comes with the gold tone ABS, and it is really more of a volume boost only. When turned off, it's just a pass through. Usually it's adequate, but sometimes I can't quite get enough juice in the "off" setting.

I know some folks just use two or three different pedals, but I'd rather keep the cords to a minimum if possible.

Banjo amplification

Yesterday I tried micing my banjo into a Fishman Loudbox mini. This is their acoustic guitar amp, and it is a beauty. Makes my Larivee acoustic sound just like a Larivee acoustic of all things. Finally someone got it figured out.

Anyways, with the banjo after about an hour I noticed that I was playing much softer and getting a much nicer sound. I tend to play to hard, to the point of buzzing. So now I'm wondering, how about the Fishman banjo pickup. What are your experiences with this. I do not want an ' electric banjo ' sound ! I want pure amplification, nothing else.

I also noticed on a video that Allison Brown used a clip on condenser mic for a concert. Maybe this is the way to go?

how know Real Tracks installed in BB?

Just installed Band in a Box yesterday (Bluegrass Pak from Janet Davis).

I purchased Real Track Set 11, downloaded and installed it (at lest, the installation file ran OK). But I cannot see within the BB program whether it is present.

	How can I tell?

I happened to come across an area in PG with quite complicated steps involving downloading BB installer, etc. Is all that needed?

Strengthening wireless signal

I'm trying to get enough signal from my modem box to my bedroom to get on the internet with my laptop. I realise this is not exactly music related but I know that the people on this forum might be better able to help me than those on computer forums. Around here most people know I have the all tech ability of a small oyster.

Amazon sells these "antennas" that supposedly boost the signal enough to do the trick but I literally don't know how they are meant to be hooked up. Do I attach them to my laptop - creating essentially a clumsy desktop - or do they attach to the cable modem in the office where there is room for such stuff.

The reviews are sketchy about things like this and the write ups assume the customer knows a lot more than I do.

I could try going to best buy or raadio shack but I often wonder of those guys are even listening when I talk. Besides neither is open at 5 30 am.

mic options

	Hi Folks,

I’ve been asked to collaborate with a band and will doing a gig in 5 days time. It’s been a very last min thang so I have had little time to prepare however it’s the first time with me playing the banjo I’m very excited.

My banjo is a resonator, I will most likely be using a mic but I am concerned about feed back.

What would the best mic to use in the short term?

Long term if I was going invest in a mic should it be or what are you guys and gals using?

If I was going to go down the pickup route what are my options?

I know that’s a lot of questions, to cap it all I will not have any time to test run what I’m doing so for the short term I looking for the safest option..

	All the best

Best Speakers for 500 Watt Powered Mixer

I have a Behringer PMP 1000 500 watt powered mixer, and I'd like to get a pair of speakers to go with it.

I'm leaning toward these Yamahas, but if anyone has a better suggestion I'm all ears.

	http://www.guitarcenter.com/Yamaha-BR12-12--2-Way-Speaker-Cabinet-102583804-i1152947.gc

From what I can tell by listening in the store, these are good speakers, and I've had good success with the Yamaha brand in the past. But they are on the heavy side and I wouldn't mind finding a less expensive alternative.

I have a working sound system right now so I don't need to make a quick decision,

Three dollar pop filter for ya!

Three feet of 1/8" brass rod and a 4" by 6" 3M stripping pad makes this nice pop filter. Look for the extra course pad that you can actually see through. Form the frame as shown. An extra circular loop is soldered where the mic ferrule will screw in place. Two small brass washers and a piece of the brass rod soldered in place to make a cross bar make it really sturdy. Sharpen the rod ends, roll the pad into a curve and poke it over the upturned rods. The nice thing about this one is (A) it is cheap, and (B) it stays in position as the mic is moved. Oh yeah, it works REALLY well!

TablEdit volume irregularity

I began to tab a tune several years ago with the PC version of TablEdit. I put it aside before finishing it. I decided to finish the tab this morning, having in the interim switched from a PC to a Mac.

When I have TablEdit play the finished piece, the sections I tabbed before play much louder than the sections I tabbed today. The volume setting in the MIDI control menu is set at max for everything.

Is there a command in there somewhere that would let me even the volume out?

I tried to upload a couple of measures to that you could play them yourself, but .tef files aren't on the allowed list for uploading to the Hangout.

Small main speakers

Tell me about some good, small sized, hifi, higher wattage, main PA speakers. Do they make such a thing?

We are thinking about replacing our small PA, by simply using our medium sized mixer, with better small main speakers. I'm talking about playing small venues, 20-40 people, close quarters, moderate volume. Places where we don't need 15" mains on monster stands, don't need the volume, don't have the room. Portability is a big plus. Just some high quality 6" speakers on small stands would work perfect. I've googled PA equipment, and it seems all about bigger equals better. There's got to be some Bose type smaller technology that I'm just not finding. Thanks for any leads!

I'm going to be playing a show with a rock artist soon, so I dug out my Gerald Jones pickup and installed it. IIRC, it really needs a preamp for best results. What do you recommend? Does it need to be a preamp for acoustic instruments, or will other types work effectively? Also, how close should the electromagnetic unit be to the underside of the head?

Audix I-5 vs Shure SM57?

I've used both to mic my banjo and I think the Audix is warmer whereas the Shure sounds more accurate. Anyone used both of these mics with different results? More volume at the same gain with the Audix, though, for what it's worth.

small project mastering

I know for bigger projects a person should let the experts master. But it's alright I think to play around with getting the best sound possible for smaller projects that you don't plan on sending to the mastering experts. In Pro Tools, you get to put a master track which is the summation of all the active tracks at once. If you're sending it to an expert to master, you shouldn't put any effects on this one. But if you decide to play around with it, what do you put on this track, and in what order?

I've been putting a compressor, brick wall limiter, and EQ, on. Having never taken lessons on mastering, I know I should try to listen to the music as much as I go thru the motions. Does anybody else want to share their techniques here? I'm sure I could learn a lot.

Roland CD-2e

Anyone using a Roland CD-2e digital recorder? Any success or problems with it?

I've been using mine to record Sunday sermons (ours is a small Assembly). It seems okay for light duty stuff.

What about recording live music at home? I suppose I shall soon find out, but the experience of others should be enlightening.

PDF Transpose Software / App

My wife and I play lots of Old Time Music, she hammered dulcimer, me clawhammer banjo and fiddle. She has more difficulty playing by ear, so I have stored about 400 tunes in pdf form on her iPad (basically just the melodies). Occasionally, however, we'd like to play some of these tunes in other keys, e.g., A rather than G, and I'd like to spare myself the chore of transposing tunes by hand and literally writing them out.

Is there a good, reliable software program or app that can "scan" a sheet music pdf file and then transpose the sheet music (actually just melody) to another key? Thanks for any ideas.

Volume pedal w/clip-on mic and pickup

Apologies if this has been addressed in a other thread. Couldn't find this exactly. I double on banjo and pedal steel in a plugged-in band. Volume level pretty high. Have been playing a Crossfire, tried a Boss Acoustic Simulator, still not satisfied with banjo-ness of sound. Since I'm accustomed to using a volume pedal (and play sitting down in this band) I thought maybe a Schatten PU and Shure Beta 98 could be mixed to balance volume and tone, and "on the mic/off-the-mic" could be controlled with the volume pedal. Thoughts?

Deering Crossfire / Fishman Aura

I'm sitting in with a self-described "Americana" band - basically amplified acoustic instruments played fairly loud + drums. I have a Crossfire that can hold its own volume-wise, but I'd like a more banjo-like tone than the Crossfire produces. Has anyone tried a Fishman Aura with a Crossfire in this kind of setting? Any observations appreciated - thanks.

15-band stereo EQ vs 31-band

I'm trying to suggest our band go out of the passive board with a 15-band stereo graphic EQ rack. You could eliminate 20-40Hz rumbles, annoying 1K-2K hz noises, and do a low pass roll off at about 16K hz.

Would it be smarter to get a 31-band?

Hypercardioid vs Supercardoid

I have an ongoing Irish trad gig in a pub and am thinking about getting a new mic. It would seem that a Hypercardoid would be advantageous for live performances in really small spaces where one is just a few feet from the speakers. I had condenser hypercardioids in my home studio some years ago but they are in storage and I can't get to them at the moment. Does anyone have any experience and recommendations for a stage hypercardioid, possibly a clip on? Bomb, bullet and Guinnessproof is a recommendation.

Nice compression plugin and EQ tip

I'm kind of going wow over the improvement I've achieved after finding the C3 Multi Band Compressor plugin. Right now all I've done with it is to use one of the mastering presets on the final stereo mix, tweaked for gain but that's all. Haven't begun to tap all the possibilities. Found it on this page which has ports for both Mac and WIndows: http://www.apulsoft.ch/freeports/

Another thing that has really given me a lot of improvement is a tip I found somewhere and even the first crack at it made a huge difference. Has to do with EQ. It's for GarageBand but you could probably get similar results with any recording app that has a wave form analyzer. Goes like this:

Find a CD with production you like for music similar to what you are recording. I used a tune from Steve Martin's The Crow.

Import the track to iTunes, make an AIF copy, and import the AIF file into a new GarageBand song project.

Enable the track's Visual EQ and check the Analyzer box. Set the Visual EQ on "Flat".

Now export the stereo mix of your tune to iTunes or disk (AIFF/uncompressed), and import that on another track in the same project.

Enable and set Visual EQ for it the same way, and enable the track's AUGraphicEQ. Mute the track.

Now play the track from your CD several times and study the Analyzer so you have a picture of how it generally looks thru the tune.

Mute the CD track, unmute your song, play it and study it in the analyzer. Look where it's significantly different from the CD song's wave form.

You're now in a position to play around with your Graphic EQ and try to shape your song so it looks more like the CD wave form in the Analyzer. In my case, I found I had a LOT of excessive frequencies at 100 Hz and a band or two on either side. When I cut that by nearly 6 DB things started looking a lot more like the CD tune, and I just kept tweaking from there, flipping back and forth between the songs.

If you find you've boosted some frequencies by much more than 1 DB or so, you'll probably get some clipping in the loud parts. I did and I fixed it by selecting all the sliders in the EQ and cutting them all at once until my most boosted frequencies weren't more than +1 DB. After that I boosted the biggest cut bands a bit... those around 100 Hz. That gave me a lot of headroom for the compressor as it turned out.

Here's a short clip of a tune before... with just Dynamics and my rather inept attempt at EQ... and after with the C3 Multiband compressor and EQ done as I described. Even in lossy MP3 format you can hear a big difference. And this mix is just with a pair of rather crappy consumer headphones. Ah the learning process!

A list of recording software

I'm curious what kind of software recording programs are still being used by BanjoHangout members?

I've got four programs on my Windows 7 computer, built up over the years, plus one on the Mac:

	MAGIX Music Maker $79

	ProTools 8.0.5 $299

	ACID Soundforge 7.0 $69

	Audacity latest (free)

	Garage Band (Mac) (free)

Plus, I know there's Cubase & Cakewalk, but I don't have them. I only use Pro Tools now, because I know it better than the others I bought earlier.

What are some other programs you have?

Anyway, I think they would be great for small rooms and backyard gigs. I am even thinking about a pair of them. (instead of just one of the bigger versions) that way I could just use one for small simple stuff, or with both I can spread the sound or use one for PA and one for a monitor, etc. The compacts break down to a not much more than a small box, as the poles break down to about 3 pcs-you can even use all extendions or none of them when in use.

Many are using their T1 box to adjust to varying mics etc. (another 500.00) With a full string band one would need to run all through a mixer to handle all of the mics, or you use two poles you could put all vocals through one, and all instrument mics through other. They claim you can put these behind you without any feedback. Well, not so easy reading the blogs. A lot of correct tweeking and placement needed to eliminate most feedback. The Compacts are about 999.00 a piece, but old dudes like me could eliminate a lot of back pain. The Compact is probably weakest with the bass, though.

Anybody using the new L1 Compact with an acoustic band setup?

	Brad

i got this back in december from my kids and although i'm slowly getting somewhere with it i simply can not figger out how to always get the sound i hear thru' the headphones to match up with what's recorded on audacity.

a couple of times i've managed to get the effect ( say echo/ delay or reverb ) on the headphones and on the LEDS but it's not recording it.

or i have no effect on the headphones but the FX LED display is indicating and the effect is recorded..........

my brother is a professor on this kinda stuff but he don't know this desk personally and even with his suggestions i'm not progressing.

all suggestions and simple step by step instructions will be very welcome.

Beats Audio

I'm getting a new desktop computer and was wondering if anyone could tell me how much difference beats audio would make in two identical models. I already have bose companion 3 speaker system on my old computer and the sound is pretty good,so my question is with the bose system would the beats audio make that much difference? Larry

Sheet Music / Book pdf App / Easy Indexing and Finding

I am using an iPad2 for sheet music files with the app Documents to Go. With that app, I am able to call up an alphabetized list of all my sheet music files on my iPad and then scroll to find an individual tune. Unfortunately, as I have well over 300 files, they appear as an alphabetized list of tunes and I have to scroll all the way down to locate a particular tune.

I'm looking for another pdf app that has a an alphanumeric "first letter" indicator so I can, e.g., get to the tunes that are way down the list quickly. The Contacts and iTunes Music apps have this feature; when the master list of contacts or music appears, with the alphabet listed on the right side of the screen, one can go to the first letter of a particular contact or song in the alphabet list and immediately call up to the screen just those particular contacts / songs (rather than scrolling all the way down to find a contact or song).

Is there some other pdf app that has this feature? Thanks.
