A dream of mine has been to eventually offer gourd banjo making workshops in Jamaica to offer students an in depth experience in the Caribbean. I am thrilled to announce I am officially registering for my first Jamaican destination “The Art of Gourd Banjo Making” workshop. The dates of this workshop are March 16-21, 2025. The class will be on the grounds of the developing Jamaica Center for the Arts in Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth. All proceeds for this class will be directly placed into building the Jamaica Center for the Arts and we are overjoyed to be able to offer you the opportunity to become involved in this ground breaking workshop. There are many accommodation options locally as well as food and many beautiful beaches to explore. The cost of the workshop is $1000 materials included. At the time of registration a 50% deposit will ensure your spot is held in the class. A maximum of 12 students will be enrolled. No woodworking or banjo playing experience is required to join the class. Students will be supplied all materials and tools to design and create their own gourd banjo. Health and safety, tool handling, and each process will be explored in great depth as I lead each student through the journey. The class will run from 9am - 5pm each day with breaks as needed. Evenings will be a time for you and family to explore the locals restaurants and beaches or simply stay back at the Center to hangout and play tunes. I am also offering a private tour of Kingston or Appleton Estate after the workshop for an additional opportunity for those if interested. This is a large stylized canvas print of Steve Martin with his prewar Florentine archtop. The print is signed by Steve on the banjo head and also signed and numbered by the artist George Cann. I got this piece through a friend who helps run Richard & Southern who is a merchandise supplier in our industry. They handled one of Steve's music tours, had him sign a few of these prints ahead of the run and this was an early one from the first batch. I simply don't have room for the piece and am giving it up. This would be a fantastic centerpiece in any music room or collection of a film buff. Because as the man says “The banjo is such a happy instrument--you can't play a sad song on the banjo - it always comes out so cheerful.” Thanks for looking, Russ

I can cover Scruggs, melodic, single string, and other styles (Travis picking, etc), applicable music theory, how to fit melodies into rolls, how to play appropriate backup. I teach from beginning to moderately advanced levels. If you are interested, we can talk on the phone about your banjo playing interests, and see if I could help you in those areas. I have a Stew Mac buffer complete with motor and stand. 4 buffing wheels. Buffing compound also included. Does a superb job in putting a high gloss on your indtrument. I moved 3 years ago, and my wife’s happiness was important than my shop. I’m also in my mid 70s so it’s time to spend more time on other pursuits. The buffer is 6 years old but has been dormant for the last 3. It’s to heavy and bulky to ship but could meet within a reasonable distance.
