Some BHO members know me and my work, and some other BHO members know my work, but don’t know it’s mine. My 25+ years experience as a player, collector, and repair and lutherie hobbyist was put to the test and augmented in a production/scheduled environment during my 3+ years at Huber Banjos working with my friend Steve Huber almost every day. Among other things, my responsibilities there included final assembly and set up, neck sets, tonering/rim hand fitting, fretwork, final inspection/QC, and many other construction and repair tasks. I performed this work on new Huber banjos as well as many other banjos ranging from student grade instruments to original pre-WW2 Gibson flathead five strings. Given my worklogs, I worked on well over 500 banjos as a conservative estimate while there. Many customer and professional/endorsee compliments were directed towards the quality of my work, while not one complaint concerning anything related to any of the tasks I performed on any banjo I worked on during my time there was ever voiced. During this time, I became personally and professionally acquainted with my friend Robin Smith, and did a fair amount of consulting, troubleshooting, and various occasional work for him as well. I have been privileged to work with both Steve and Robin as well as to gain their trust and friendship. Both have been of great help and encouragement as I moved towards opening my own shop. Both have also graciously extended themselves as professional references on my behalf. I don’t know of two individuals who would have had more exposure to my character, work ethic, and abilities, or who I would rather choose as references. I also enjoy working on vintage open back banjos that are my other passion as a blossoming classic/parlor fingerstyle player and collector. I treat every banjo for what it is…the owner’s investment of some financial worth, if not prized possession that took a considerable amount of savings to be able to own. O'Carolan was a blind travelling Harper who composed tunes for wealthy patrons in Ireland during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The tunes I've selected for this book translate well to the Banjo and are ideal for those Banjo players who are looking to venture outside of 'traditional' Bluegrass boundaries and expand their repertoire to include some unique and beautiful Irish music. This book/CD project has taken me over two years to complete and I'm really pleased with the result. I don't think there is a such a source of O'Carolan music arranged especially for the Banjo available anywhere else in the World. Every Banjo picker should have a copy of this book, (of course I would say that wouldn't I!) but these fine tunes will definately add a nice 'change of pace' to the usual Bluegrass repertoire and enrich the material performed by Celtic Banjo pickers and accoustic instrument (or even electric) Folk bands. I have presented O'Carolan's melodies in this collection for Banjo in a straight forward manner and without adding too many traditional Irish 'flourishes'. I think that this approach, together with the chordal structures and the instruments used for the recordings give them a more contemporary sound which, to my ears any way, really suits the music. Many of the tunes have not been available arranged for the 5 String before. They were printed on turn of the century off set and letter press printing presses. Here is Eric's description: Mainly I wanted to try to do as much manual work (relying on traditional lithographic techniques) on them as possible. The green background and blue borders are hand cut from rubylith, the characters I scanned individually from a 1912 ATF type catalog, as well as the border parts. I choked the green ink in the center as much as was practical to achieve an "antiqued" fade effect. Each one is a little different. There are all kinds of crazy things that happened on press that helped create the end result- normally things that I wouldn't be able to try because consistency, stability of ink/image is regarded as the highest goal for commercial printers, so I'm glad for the opportunity to let the process inform the final print & become its own thing.
