c. 1895 Cole Eclipse 3000 "Man in the Moon" banjo serial number 4491. This five string banjo is in excellent condition and original except for the 20's Patent Planet peg head tuners and the head, bridge and strings. The head is calfskin in excellent condition. The quality of the mother-of-pearl inlay engraving is unmatched by any but the finest Fairbanks engravers of the early 1900's and a small hand full of modern engravers. It has a 27" scale fingerboard and the most desirable size 11" head. it will be shipped in a vintage hard shell case in fine condition. An appraisal dated 2006 in the amount of $2500 from Vintage Instruments of Philadelphia and signed by Fred Oster will be included. Questions and photo requests are welcome. We work with an organization called Starfish Ministries (it is run by close relatives of mine), who has been doing a lot of good relief work in Haiti for quite a while now (I actually went to Haiti with them in 1997). They build and run orphanages and schools, doing some of the work that Haiti's perpetually messed-up government is unable to do. Many homes in Haiti have been destroyed by the crazy storms that happened in the last several months, and we wanted to help. Monica has created a quilt from Banjo Hangout shirts--you can see it on eBay here. It's sweet--even has music note-shaped stitching! Bart Reiter standard open back banjo. I bought this banjo last spring and played until I restored / converted my grandmothers 1926 Vega Little wonder over the summer and now that’s all I play. This banjo is in great lightly played condition. I replaced the stock tuner buttons with ivory buttons and changed the 5th string tuner from a 5-star to a straight pull Waverly. if I can find it I will include the original 5th string tuner too. There are some light scratches on the bottom of the pot, which is painted black so you might be able to rub them out or repaint. The action is set high for claw hammer playing but not too high and there is a banjoseen.com velum head on it. Please look at the picture that I posted so you can see exactly what you are getting. I play mostly clawhammer and old-time styles. I thought this banjo would enhance my mode of playing with some added volume, but this is a bluegrass banjo! It's made to be picked, Scruggs style.
