Please join the discussion on this tune in Sound Off http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/192180 Gypsy Caravan is an original tune I’m composing on 4-string cello banjo, tuned DGDA. Instead of a flatpick I use plastic fingerpicks on thumb and first finger. After experimenting with different tunings, I like to keep this beast tuned GDAE, two octaves below fiddle. On this piece I’m capoed at the fifth fret, putting me the cello range with the fourth string tuned an octave below the second, for a drone. The equivalent tuning in fiddle/mandolin/Irish tenor banjo range is ADAE. The 4-string cello banjo I’m playing is made by Gold Tone, a CEB-4. Marcy Marxer is responsible for igniting the interest that brought cello banjos back into existence, after they had gone done the black hole of (almost) extinction for an amazing number of years. I’m grateful for their reemergence, since both the 4 and 5-string cello banjos are important to maintaining my musical equilibrium. They’re also responsible for my current relationship with Gold Tone as an independent product specialist and dealer - something I had previously never imagined myself getting into. I was hired to play this as the processional at a wedding, which meant I had to learn it. I wasn't happy with the banjo tabs I found for the tune so this is my own arrangement. I took liberties with the score in two measures - I hope you can't find them, but if you know the piece well enough you will. Played on my Kel Kroydon/Dannick into a Zoom Handy H4. Everything you hear was produced on the H4 - this was recorded with the built-in microphones and one of the built-in reverb settings. No EQ or additional effects were done after the fact.

Steve Caddick is playing this tune. This was recorded at the Early Spring Banjo Fling in 2003 in Mansfield, MA where I was the Headliner. This is my solo tenor banjo rendition of this old tune. It includes the verse which is seldom heard. A bit of trivia for you Boomers, this song was written by June Lockhart's father, Eugene, she played the mom on the 1950's TV show Lassie. In looking at the song style choices, there needs to be one for 4-string banjos!

Steve Caddick and Rene Marion playing Avalon. This is a tune from 1920 that was introduced by Al Jolson. Very upbeat tune, played quickly with chord melody and improvisation on a tenor banjo and rythum provided by Rene on a tenor guitar. Tunings are standard CGDA for the tenor banjo and a slight variant for the TG, still CGDA, but, the high strings are replaced with heavy gauge wound strings so those 2 strings can be tuned an octave lower than normal to give the chord a closer harmony.

IYASAKA is that festival music which was made 300 years ago in my native town. I playing this music by the Drumming style of the original style. Drumming style: The code sound is flicking all five strings with the third finger of the right hand to beat a banjo. The melody sound is flicking to make the Tapping of the left hand and finger pick of the metal of the right hand like the hammer dulcimer to hit against one string. The tuning is gCGAD. To me, this guy is the great unkown treasure of banjo. This is a recording of Donna Lee written by the great Charlie Parker. Tom plays bluegrass but now is working exclusively on jazz. Carolan's Draught - Irish harp tune

The "clairseach" or Irish harp was tuned diatonically and had metal wire for strings, usually made of brass, silver, gold or a silver-gold alloy! This classic piece by the blind harper Carolan (1670-1738) translates easily to contemporary Celtic 5-string banjo. It's a popular session tune, played with reverence for the last of the Irish harper-composers. Backing on nylon-string guitar is Gabriel Donohue (Athenry) and on bodhran is Robbie Walsh (Dublin - 2008 All-Ireland Fleadh Champion). Notice the crisp metallic tone of the banjo, which was achieved by using a steel violin mute on the bridge, giving the G-tuned banjo a harp-like quality recalling the clairseach. One more jazz tune played by Tom Slavicek. This one has a nice swing feel to it. If I could play a quarter of what this guy could I'd run naked down the street. Don't worry folks... it ain't happening any time soon!
