Mary Did You Know

A version I thought up this week before Christmas. I used two banjo tracks, one rhythm banjo and one lead, using a homemade mute. I like the staccato effect on the banjos. John Kuhn (aka the Kidd) added some bass, synth string sounds and a conga. You can tell how much I love flamenco guitar, and it somehow wound up influencing this, in my banjo version. This is a great song and i hope my version doesn't detract from it.

Since then, it has been recorded over and over by such diverse artists as Frank Sinatra, Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin, Babyface, Chicago, Big Bird and Bob Dylan.

I was hired to play this as the processional at a wedding, which meant I had to learn it. I wasn't happy with the banjo tabs I found for the tune so this is my own arrangement. I took liberties with the score in two measures - I hope you can't find them, but if you know the piece well enough you will. Played on my Kel Kroydon/Dannick into a Zoom Handy H4. Everything you hear was produced on the H4 - this was recorded with the built-in microphones and one of the built-in reverb settings. No EQ or additional effects were done after the fact.

Steve Caddick is playing this tune. This was recorded at the Early Spring Banjo Fling in 2003 in Mansfield, MA where I was the Headliner. This is my solo tenor banjo rendition of this old tune. It includes the verse which is seldom heard. A bit of trivia for you Boomers, this song was written by June Lockhart's father, Eugene, she played the mom on the 1950's TV show Lassie. In looking at the song style choices, there needs to be one for 4-string banjos!

Actually an anti-driving drunk song. As I passed from one room to another, the radio was playing the tune that I used for the chorus. I had no idea what the lyrics were, but the tune caught me, and I was singing along to it, making up my own words. About two hours later, the whole song had been cobbled together.
