This operatic song was learned before a trip to Italy when I didn't yet know I'd be staying in Lucca, the very town of Giacomo Puccini's birth. As it turned out, he also wrote Girl of the Golden West which was performed in San Francisco in 1907 and included the well-known mistrel Jake Wallace, who taught Lotta Crabtree how to play banjo. Small world.

Minuet , Notebook for Anna Magdalena

This is from the “Notebook for Anna Magdalena." Apparently there is some controversy over the actual authorship of this minuet. Christian Petzold is believed to have composed two of the pieces from the 1725 Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach: the familiar "Minuet in G major" (BWV Anh.II 114) and its partner piece, "Minuet in G minor" (BWV Anh.II 115). These were traditionally believed to have been composed by J.S. Bach but scholarship, particularly on the part of Hans-Joachim Schulze, has recently pointed to Petzold. The Minuet in G Major is catalogued as a BWV Anh. piece because until today, nobody knows if Christian Petzold or J.S. Bach was the one who composed it. Petzold acted as an agent of J.S. Bach keyboard Partitas. Soprano 4 string banjo & Baritone 4-string banjo.

This is not a perfect take but it has not been edited. This is the first take of several done on my portable 8 track today. Thanks to John Bullard for the arrangement. It took a while memorize starting with the last measure first and working backwards. It still needs to be cleaned it up, it's a little squeaky, because my finger picks where not on just right, but you get the idea. It is fun to play. John is such a master arranger his logic is brilliant. If you want to hear what it is supposed to sound like listen to John's version.

I recorded this tonight at the Old Town School of Folk Music Concert Hall. I usually dont like drums with banjo but the brushes on the banjo head seam acceptable and conga and Cuban beats have a lot in common with banjo rolls. There might be a real third part but I added one to make it sound more modern at the end. I heard some one play this tune on u tube and it stuck in my head so when this happens I try to record the tune. Hope you like it.

Bach cello-lute suite ... for 8 measures or so ... the rest is "in the style of" ....... My daughter, Molly needed something "classical" to play for her "juries" at college ... Pat Cloud is helping her with Chick Corea's "Spain", and she's learning my rendition of Joe Zawinul's "Birdland" ... we were weak in the classical category ...

Verdi's Nabucco, or the slave choir. Not yer typical banjo tune but it was fun to do. Kinda hard to play stuff this slow, especially as a solo, and make the notes ring as the microphone swallowed a lot of the sustain but what the hay. It's a gorgeous melody and I enjoy playing it. The original score is in F# but it sounds pretty cool in C on the banjo.

(<i>Rondo alla Turca</i>, last movement of his Piano Sonata No. 11) - another rediscovery from 1981. I couldn't play this one now even if I tried secretly at home, never mind live. I hear a few more fluffs and bum notes. Too bad. I'd like to try this once more. Needs a 4th member - mandolin player or fiddler. Have to work out the fingering all over again, though. That's the problem with melodic stuff - can't just jam it, unless maybe you're Bela Fleck or Eric Clapton.

Found some old live recordings on a 1981 cassette which someone must have taken when I was playing a gig with Steve Newman and Stef (our current bass player). Steve is a great guitar player and this one is typical of his inventiveness. He used to love putting together medleys of tunes - this one of Grieg, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Rodrigo. Nice clean guitar, but the banjo not quite so clean :)

The music is from the second chorus of a contata by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) written in 1840 to commemorate Johann Gutenberg and the invention of printing. The words are from a hundred years earlier, written in 1739 by Charles Wesley. In 1855, after both Wesley and Mendelssohn were dead, Dr. William Cummings put the words and music together in spite of evidence that neither author nor composer would have approved, and voila, we have a Christmas Carol. I play it here on my Nechville Classic Eclipse.
