Setup

The setup was bad , big buzz problem on the 4 string , it was impossible to play in good condition , very frustrating . I bring the banjo to a luthier for a good setup . The strings nut was aslo very too high. Wayne send me 4 other bridge with different size for remove buzzing . Now i use the highest bridge . i have buzz when i tune the 4 string down to C . The neck is not smooth but bumpy. It's disappointing

Wayne make his job when he try to help me for resolve buzzing problem and i know that he try his best for have contented buyer. He was ok for refunding the cost of the banjo but i will lose too much money in this case ( the shipping for france + tax ). Wayne refund me the cost of the luthier and send me 4 bridges and a new tailpiece (ugly compared with the beautiful but cracked original tailpiece) for free.

Sound

sweet is the best way i can describe it. really well-balanced and warm sounding. i stuck a small piece of sponge between the dowel stick and head but it almost doesn't even need it. it just sounds great to me.

Setup

it was set up really well when i got it. wayne sent some extra bridges with it but i haven't even messed w/ them really. i put ghs mediums on it and now it feels like mine.

Appearance

i love the block rim. the finish is tru oil. nice and unassuming. the banjo is walnut...it looks dark and rich. i was a little on the fence about the integral wood bracket band but it's really grown on me. it's comfortable to play sitting down and it's different. i really like it. as mentioned in the other reviews, i'm not completely nuts about the tension hoop but it's not a big deal to me. the craftmanship is excellent. i love this banjo. incredible for the money.

Reliability

my only concern is that the neck has no truss rod and a deep frailing scoop. i hesitate to tune it up to A or D w/ the medium strings on it. b/c it's fretless, capoing isn't an option. so far, though, this concern is unfounded but i might put slightly lighter strings on it to put my mind at ease.
i can't imagine having any reliability issues w/ this instrument; it's well-made.

Customer Service

wayne was more than helpful the few times i corresponded w/ him. this banjo was already built so there wasn't a whole lot of back and forth. he seems like a very conscientious, professional guy who's not out to charge a fortune. i think he's going to build a great reputation for himself.

aside from the tension hoop, everything is right-on. the tuners are imports but they work great.

i love this banjo. i almost wish it was fretted b/c i think i'd stick my ramsey special in long-term parking in my closet. i wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy another of wayne's banjos. they are top-notch and an incredible value. i urge everyone to check him out.

Sound

This banjo has a very woody tone with just a hint of chime and sustain from the from the spun brass tone ring. Notes are big, round and fat sounding. It is a very good banjo for melodic clawhammer playing.

Setup

The set-up was very good. In addition, Wayne sent three extra hand-made compensated bridges. The extras are different heights and materials to accomodate a range of sonic and set-up preferences.

Appearance

This particular banjo is very pleasing to me. The inlay pattern is hand-cut to replicate a design from my late grandfather's 1934 Sears & Roebuck guitar. I sent a photo of the guitar to Wayne..he hand-cut the pearl and copied the pattern perfectly. At my request, Wayne added a very well-executed boat heel. The Fairbanks inspired headstock shape works great with the inlay. The wood is well-chosen. Otherwise the design is simple. Because it lacks the normal hardware, the intergrated wood flange rim is unusual looking. It is not fancy. Instead, this banjo has its own sort of elegant simplicity. I like it very much.

This instrument is brand new. I don't have a track record. All the components are high-quality and the construction is solid. Wayne's banjo have a good reputation. I expect it to be very reliable.

Customer Service

Wayne is the best guy to work with. First, the construction took only a few weeks from the time of my order. He e-mailed and called during the process to ask questions and offer options. He called after the banjo arrived just to make sure I was pleased with everything. I've never known a builder more anxious to please his clients.

Components

The H.C. Dobson style tone ring is an outstanding feature of this banjo. It is awesone! The only hardware on the banjo are: hooks & nuts, grooved tension ting (Wayne is switching to a notched ring for future banjos), tuners (standard tuners are imported planetaries...upgrades are offered), Renaisannce head, and a no-knot tailpiece. Everything else is hand-made wood by Wayne.

This banjo sounds great, plays extremely well, and is a unbelievable value. Waynes objective has been to create an affordable custom instrument. He has done that and more. This banjo delivers all of the tone and playablilty you expect from a pro-grade custom instrument...without the fancy aesthetics and unnecessary decorations...all at a price that is frankly too low.
