Sound

The construction on the Boston is a bit different with the steel rim instead of wood. Gives it a nice mellow tone which is probably not for everyone but I sure like. It does not ring like the more expensive Deerings, like the Sierra and the deluxe which were the two banjos I thought I would like. The tone sold me and the more I play it the more I like it. I am sure there are better sounding banjos out there but this one spoke to me.

This banjo is rock solid, everything seems of high quality it has a nice satin finish.
Did I say this is a solid banjo. I haven't had it long enough for anything to wear.

I dislike the guitar style tuners but they seem to be of good/high quality and staying in tune has not been an issue. It's just a me issue.

I would absolutely replace it with another Boston. I don't think this banjo is for everyone (what banjo is) it doesn't have a real sharp ring to it but a more mellower sound. The tone of this banjo is what sold me on it, I absolutely love the sound and this is one solid banjo it just feels right in my hands. I bought it at Acoustic Music in Salt Lake City. They have very competitive prices and exceptional customer service. No sales pressure and these guys jumped at everything I asked.

The Boston has very little clearance under J bolts for a leather cradle strap....had to shave down my leather strap to fit, and pulling it through was very difficult. I'll probably never get it back off.

If you've been plunking with an asian made banjo, you don't know what you're missing. Get a Deering, but get a resonator model....Boston or Sierra is the low end.

I love it but if I had it to do over again I would probably buy the Sierra for the brass tone ring, only to stay true to bluegrass.
