For Sale: Orpheum "Number 3 Special" with price reduced |
Orpheum Number 3 "special" 4-string open back tenor banjo. 17 fret, outer diameter of pot 11 5/8 inches (see pic).
Beautiful instrument, ornately inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone, all hand carved and inlaid. Recently inspected and set up by a first class string instrument only shop. Part of the sale will go back to this store and of course the Hangout will get 2%.
All components are there although arm rest needs to be soldered or glued. (a very easy fix). Fingerboard is flat and straight, not warped, no cracks, some finger wear on some of the first three frets, frets all good, no fret work required, intonation great, white calf skin head, original tuners! Includes original case although case back needs to be glued or otherwise repaired. Sausage style leather handle is in great shape.
See pics. One thing I want to point out, and it is shown in a pic is there is a small crack, which is a "flake" crack. You will see it on the neck heel. The crack is cosmetic only. You can press it flat and it disappears. Another simple repair that I will let you do. But again this is NOT structural and appears to have been there for years. You can fix it, leave as-is without worry and if it ever did flake off you could just glue it back on. This is not an issue except for the most picky collectors and even then easily fixed. A drum head couple tension hooks are very slightly bent. Look closely at pics. I want to be 100% open and clear on exactly what condition this banjo is in. I can take a video and email it to anyone who wants to see a movie showing all possible angles, etc. Again all inlay is intact and never repaired.
I bought this banjo but have decided I will probably never play it and it's worth too much and too rare to just hang on my wall. This is the number 3 "special. I will answer any additional questions as-needed. |
