I'm a block rim builder. I think block rims open up a whole world of acoustic possibilities for the banjo that are simply not practical for steam- bent wrapped rims. As with the bridges, each wood type has its own characteristic acoustic response.
In this photo, in no particular order, are the woods that I typically use for block rims: 1) maple; 2) mahogany; 3) ironwood; 4) pau lope; 5) hickory; 6) lacewood; 7) cherry; 8) walnut.
