I build my own bridges. I find can alter the tone and response of a banjo dramatically by the type of wood use for a bridge. Each wood type has its own characteristic sound.
In no particular order, here are the types of wood I have found are the most successful for bridges:
1) hickory; 2) birch; 3) fir; 4) lacewood; 5) maple; 6) poplar; 7) cherry.
