This is a waltz I wrote several years ago on the banjo, and recorded with Mark Hellenberg on ukulele on the Hotpoint Stringband album Light Fuse Get Away. When the terrible tsunami hit South Asia on the day after Christmas (aka Boxing Day) in 2004, it was a disaster of unbelievable proportions, but also memorable was the way there was a huge outpouring of love and contributions from the rest of the world toward the victims of the tsunami. This sad but hopeful tune is about that.

Here's a version of Half Past Four to go along with the tab posted with my pictures. It's a (slower) companion to the YouTube video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWWP0Nif5Z4&fmt=18

sort of a wacked-out version; as if we phoned it in! with Mark Hellenberg on percussion, and me on vocals.

If anyone heard a loud buzzing coming from their beehives last night at midnight, or noticed their cows kneeling, it's because on the eve of Old Christmas (Christmas as traditionally celebrated in many parts of Appalachia on January 6th) animals traditionally did that sort of thing.
I've uploaded a quick iPhone recording of Old Christmas played by yours truly but from the playing of Boyd Asher of Kentucky, Happy Old Christmas! Looking forward to the Eighth of January now...

On the way to the studio a few years back, this song popped into my head; I hadn't thought of it for years. My friends Al and Emily Cantrell were with me as we were recording some stuff together. After I played and sang this song, I came out to listen to it and Emily Cantrell was sort of hooo-hooo-ing along, harmonizing. It sounded really cool and spooky and I asked her to go in and record it, which she did. We listened and she decided she wanted to redo it; her husband urged her to stay off the root of the chords. We listened and it was better. I had the brainstorm to put both her vocal tracks on. Way cool and spooky!
As a side note: this track was purchased by HBO for use over the closing credits of an episode of Deadwood.

I just saw True Grit and this tune was vaguely present in the soundtrack at one point. It just stayed in my head. I remember first hearing this on a Doc Watson album like 30 years or so ago. Bill Van Horn gourd banjo, recorded at my desk on my iphone.

I wrote the first tune. The second is trad, far as I know, and the third is Tippy Get Your Hair Cut, which is from Melvin Wine. Kind of a wacked-out medley, huh? It's from the last Hotpoint Stringband recording, Light Fuse Get Away.
