I can't remember if it was 79 or 80,but I was living in Providence R.I. and visiting The Music Emporium trying out their Stelling Gospel model with the cross on the resonator. I remember the price 1400. I was so broke then, but it was fun to play it. Anyway, I looked through their store brochure and saw Bela Fleck as a teacher there. I'd just heard of him and how great he already was. I half jokingly asked them if I could get a lesson from him and they said how he was booked full for the next three months. So I asked would it be possible three months down the road and they said OK . Three months later I'm back on time and everything. They said he was in one of the rooms on the 2nd floor so I went up and introduced myself. I said I wanted my playing to flow along better and he first told me to play something I knew so he could tell where I was. So I did and then I asked if he would teach me Dixie Hoedown. He wrote Dixie Hoedown into tab in no time with his banjo leaning up beside him . He tapped the fingerboard a very few times to check a note. He handed the tab to me and asked me to play it which I did slowly.(1st take on this recording)

Great story. That tune was nicely picked . You're a fine player. Do you still have the tab? I'm learning this one, but I'm going to shift to your/Bela style. What a great tune.
Cheers

I wonder how many more people in 2012 know who Bela is compared to the number in 1980. |

Hi Steve, Can I get you to clarify something? Is this recording of you, playing this tune for the FIRST time, from a tab? If yes, that's amazing. If no, it's still brilliant.
Cheers |

No,Andy.I sight read the tab for Bela at a pace that I read the first time through on any tab.I pick a speed that lets the timing work correctly. That's how I always read tab(1/2 speed approx) so as to set the right time to the notes.
I recorded this a few months after brain surgery. in '07. Thank you for appreciating my effort,Andy. |

It's very impressive - I really enjoyed it. Looks like the surgeon managed to keep the banjo picking wiring intact!

hope i got the right profile steve seeing as ya have more than one 'wink wink'. ya seem to have a lot of time on your hands for a fisherman and 'expert' banjo player, how'd ya do it? maybe you could write a book someday so as we can all learn your secret huh!!! |

The trade-offs from my surgery prevented me from operating a workboat safely,so I sold out after lobstering for over 50 years. Now I'll sell some red spruce as I need money.
No hurry. |
