I always liked this tune. I researched to find as many verses as I could, and chose the ones I liked best.
The banjo is a Gibson RB-4.

By Gillian Welch, although this version certainly doesn't sound like hers!

I'll put up this in honor of Levon Helm of The Band, one of the greats of American music, who died today.
It's one of the first songs I tried recording, I've learned some since then.
Godspeed, Levon -- wish I could sing it like you did!

There are actually two songs I know entitled "Diamond Joe". Inspired by the Red Clay Ramblers' version on their "Yonder" album some years back, though I changed the verses around a bit.

I first heard this by Flatt & Scruggs in the early 60's, but I think they got it by reworking an older song named "I'm Thinking Tonight Of The Old Folks", recorded by the Monroe Brothers.

A Carter Family song I liked. Not sure about the composers, that's what I found while searching for authorship. It may not be correct...
The banjo is a Gibson RB-75.

A mix of gospel, science fiction and cold-war fears, all combined into one. I couldn't resist adding some sound effects found on the web for good measure!
The banjo is a Deering Golden Wreath with the "06" ring.

I used a blend of clawhammer and three-fingers on this one...

Everyone plays this uptempo, but to me it might just as well be sung from the viewpoint of someone older, looking back....

As the song goes, my house is old and needs a new roof!

I first learned this from Ron Thomason and the Dry Branch Fire Squad in the early 80's. No banjo (blasphemy!), but thought I'd post it anyway....

Need Me No Longer
While visiting the mandolincafe.com, I found a thread that included a scan of a handwritten song. There was no title nor was there a composer shown, just the words. I had no recollection of hearing this before, no idea how the melody was supposed to go, so I made up a simple one for it. For lack of a name, I just call it "Need Me No Longer".
If anyone knows the composer, please let me know.

I heard an mp3 of this, and decided to try it myself.
If someone knows who the author is, I'd like to add it to the credits....

I learned this from a collection of very old Stanley Brothers material, taken from recordings made between 1947-1952.
I'm guessing that Pee Wee Lambert was the singer, as it didn't sound like either Ralph or Carter (could be wrong about that). Possibly for that reason, I don't recall them doing the song that much later on in the years, sans Pee Wee.

I first heard this one nearly 30 years ago, from the old Dry Branch Fire Squad back when Johnny Lee Baker was singing tenor with Ron Thomason.
Here's something I did back in 2006.

I first learned this from Ralph Stanley. The song is in F, I just tuned the banjo for the standard G tuning and played it that way as a learning experience. Come to think of it, everything I do sounds like that!

I'd like to be a small part of life
With some few things to achieve
Just to know I've been a fruitless cause
Would make my poor heart grieve...

Not sure just who this came from, but it's one that has been recorded by many. I didn't see any other version already posted here at the hangout, so here's one...
