A truly lovely cowboy song from pre-1900 (?) eastern Utah. In any case, there is indeed a real Blue Mountain in eastern Utah, it really does have a horse head on it's side, and I've seen it myself -but not from horseback. Recorded on a Vega Tubaphone.

Neat tune that someone asked about on BHO......which spurred me to figure it out. The very best thing about this tune, however, is that it was sung in the movie ("Paint Your Wagon") by Lee Marvin: a gentleman normally known more for his drinking than for his singing. In that spirit, I drank several beers in his memory before sitting down to record this. Played out of open G tuning on my Vega Whyte Laydie.

Foster, of course, was a pianist; and wrote for the piano. But many of his wonderful tunes work well on the 5-string in clawhammer style, which goes to show just how throughly he'd absorbed the feel of the contemporary black American music of his era.
"Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair: was one of my family's favorites when I was a small child except that my father, Gene, always sang it "I dream of Geanie with the light brown mustache".
Naturally I had to try to figure it out on the banjo when I grew up (the song, not the mustache) and it works rather nicely for such a sweet slow tune. Played out of open G tuning on a Vega Whyte Laydie.

Sometimes you try something that normally has nothing to do with banjos and it turns out to sound as if it had been written for the instrument in the first place. This is one of those tunes. Recorded on a Vega Tubaphone in open G tuning.

The iconic song from "Showboat", originally sung by Paul Robeson in the Broadway play and then covered by everyone from Djanjo Reinhardt to Frank Sinatra. (Frank Sinatra???) My version is an homage to both John Jorgenson -who first really turned me on to Jazz- and his then partner in crime Doug Mattocks -who showed me that you could play *anything* on the banjo if you only wanted to badly enough... And this is one of those wonderful tunes where you don't have to play things at high speed or with a lot of bells and whistles to make it sound good: just play the melody and let the music speak for itself. Recorded on my Vega Whyte Laydie in open G tuning.

Yes, that's 'Sir Arthur Sullivan' as in "Gilbert & Sullivan" which explains why the melody is so darned good. A wonderful gospel tune that's fallen by the wayside because the title forms such unfortunate pictures in your head, but the original reference was to the Salvation Army -who are not known for actual warfare. Played out of open G tuning with a guitar and a bass behind it, the tune will pull audience members right up out of their seats, and it works equally well as a Bluegrass banjo piece. Recorded on my Vega Whyte Laydie.

Many years ago I saw Carol Burnett perform this ballad on her TV show and liked it so well that I eventually worked up my own version.
