'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus" is a popular Christian hymn with music by William J. Kirkpatrick and lyrics by Louisa M. R. Stead. The lyrics were written in 1882. They appeared in Stead's Songs of Triumph.
It is said that Louisa M. R. Stead wrote the lyrics after she watched her husband drown and die.
The song is included in many hymnals and has been recorded by many artists.

Here are some sound clips with the CEB-4, Gold Tone’s 4-string cello banjo. I’ve played around with different tuning ranges on these and found they’re quite nice tuned either the way GT intended, as a cello CGDA; or GDAE and octave below fiddle (Irish tenor/octave mandolin); or, (with the same gauges for cello tuning) all the way down to double octave GDAE (two octaves bellow violin!). I demoed these 3 tunings in a couple YouTube videos a while back (something like “Paul Roberts Cello Banjo 1 and 2”).
In this current cello banjo episode, I’m in cello range - CGAD and AGAD. It’s a five-minute segment in which I go through different ranges, cruising up the neck with a capo, until I get to the 7th fret, which places me in GDAE, an octave below fiddle. This is the range in which Irish musicians have tuned 4-string banjo in order to play an octave below fiddle with the same relative fingering positions, like an octave mandolin.
The clip starts out in AGAD - like cello tuning only with the 4th string raised a note giving an octave drone off the 2nd. This is an original piece I call “The Swallow.”
At 1:27 I go into O’Keiffe’s Slide in same tuning as above. Then I keep the tuning going up the neck to higher capo positions. Once again, at the 7th fret I’m in GDAE where I hang out for a couple more tunes; Cluck Old Hen and Merrily Kiss the Quaker’s Wife.
I love both 4 and 5-string cello banjos, CEB-4 and CEB-5 and have enjoyed being a crusader for them. Hope you enjoy the sounds.

I recorded another version of this tune last year and dedicated it to Ho C Ying, a Chinese lady banjo player and friend.
This take is dedicated to another friend who has deep roots in bluegrass music, Don Borchelt.
Don has the ability to be both a great musician and a great encourager of other musicians. The first thing that caught my ear, when I began listening to Don's music, was his remarkable use of highly advanced melodic 3-finger styling to bring out such beauty in old-time tunes - and I was awe-struck by Don's musical imagination and the fluidity and sensitivity of his playing. As for many others, Don is both an inspiring and encouraging influence for me.
It's a tune called A Promise of Spring.

Please listen in earphones to get a good representation of what this instrument puts out. I was amazed to find out, when I was changing the strings, that it tunes all the way down here.

Gold Tone 5-string cello banjo. I hope you enjoy this original work-in-progress. The symbolism behind the name, Blue Train Rising, is a person whose heart is broken, getting back on the track of life, for the journey to the northern part of his soul.

I think this is the one I did with low-tuned nylon strings on a plectrum (unless it's a 4-string cello banjo; can't remember for sure).

Here is a demonstration of some of the possible tuning ranges of the 4-string cello banjo. I'm playing a Gold Tone CEB-4.
Irish tenor/octave mandolin tuning: GDAE
Cello tuning: CGDA
Double Octave: GDAE (one octave lower than Irish tenor)
Cycling through, in the above order, I play a major scale before Cooley's Reel, followed by Cluck Old Hen. The whole theatrical routine takes 6.5 minutes. I'd be very interested in hearing your response.

Played on a mandola-type lute made by Stefan Sobell which I strung to play as a 5-string banjo.
Draper's Maggot is an English Country Dance Tune in 3/4 time; first appears in 13th edition of the Playford's Dancing Master (1706).
I found Draper's Maggot in Michael Raven's One Thousand English Country Dance Tunes, written in D; I'm playing it in key F using fCFCD tuning.
The word "maggot" derives from the Italian magioletta, meaning a plaything or something of slight or small consequence.
Hope you enjoy. Please join in the discussion on Sound Off. Thanks for listening.

Gypsy Caravan is an original tune I’m composing on 4-string cello banjo, tuned DGDA. Instead of a flatpick I use plastic fingerpicks on thumb and first finger.
After experimenting with different tunings, I like to keep this beast tuned GDAE, two octaves below fiddle. On this piece I’m capoed at the fifth fret, putting me the cello range with the fourth string tuned an octave below the second, for a drone. The equivalent tuning in fiddle/mandolin/Irish tenor banjo range is ADAE.
The 4-string cello banjo I’m playing is made by Gold Tone, a CEB-4. Marcy Marxer is responsible for igniting the interest that brought cello banjos back into existence, after they had gone done the black hole of (almost) extinction for an amazing number of years.
I’m grateful for their reemergence, since both the 4 and 5-string cello banjos are important to maintaining my musical equilibrium. They’re also responsible for my current relationship with Gold Tone as an independent product specialist and dealer - something I had previously never imagined myself getting into.
On my website, http://www.banjocrazy.com, I have an interview with Marcy Marxer, entitled, Cello Banjo Pioneer
http://www.banjocrazy.com/articles/armarcy2.shtml
I hope you enjoy the tune.
Cheers,
PauL

a Mantovana is a sixteenth century song composed by the Italian tenor Giuseppe Cenci, also known as Giuseppino del Biado, (d. 1616). Its earliest known appearance in print is in del Biado's 1600 collection of madrigals. The melody, later also known as "Ballo di Mantova" or "Aria di Mantova" gained wide currency in Renaissance Europe, being recorded variously as the Scottish “My mistress is prettie,” the Polish “Pod Krakowem,” Spanish "Virgen de la Cueva" and the Ukrainian “Kateryna Kucheryava." It is best-known as the melody of Bed"5;ich Smetana's The Moldau and of the Israeli national anthem Hatikvah.
I added the third part, in case old Giuseppe lifted the original riff from a raga, which I - of course - suspect:)

Hava Nagila הבה נגילה is a Hebrew folk song, the title meaning "let us rejoice". It is a song of celebration, especially popular amongst Jewish and Romani communities, and is a staple of band performers at Jewish festivals. The melody was taken from a Ukrainian folk song from Bukovina.
Hava Nagila is often played to accompany the horah, a type of circle dance originating in the Balkans but also found in other countries. It became a national dance in Israel, having been brought to Israel by the Romanian settlers in the second half of the 19th century.
In the early days, Horah was popular mainly in the Kibbutzim and small communities. Later it became a must in group dances throughout Israel, and at weddings and other celebrations by Jews in Israel, the United States and Canada. The dance appeared in North America in the early 20th century, well before modern Israeli independence, brought directly from Eastern Europe by Jewish immigrants.
At bar and bat mitzvahs, it is custom to raise the honoree and his or her family members on a chair during the horah. This is also done nowadays at many Jewish weddings, following the Israeli tradition.
To start the dance, everybody forms a circle, holding hands, and steps forward toward the right with the left foot, then follows with the right foot. The left foot is then brought back, followed by the right foot. This is done while holding hands and circling together in a fast and cheerful motion to the right. Large groups allow for the creation of several concentric circles.

I heard this fiddle tune in the early 60s on The New New Lost City Ramblers album Gone to the Country. It's not quite the way they play it, just how it decided to roll out of my banjo. "Jacob's Ladder" on The Soundbird by Gold Tone
I was jamming with my nephew Jakob Liljenwall, a Vancouver based musician, when this tune began to emerge. Jakob came up with the opening riff on cello banjo and it rolled from there. Perhaps next time we see each other we can record it together. I've included an MP3 high fidelity recording for those who would like to don a headset and get a better picture of how this instrument sounds.
The Soundbird, a custom Paul Roberts tenor style banjo by Gold Tone, is a BanjoCrazy.com exclusive. Visit http://banjocrazy.com/ where all Gold Tone stringed instruments are available and where you can also read interviews with premier banjo players like Adam Hurt whose gourd banjo CD "Earth Tones" I had the honor of recording.
Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy.

Here we are, ladies and gentlemen, on the bottom of the Grand Canyon, listening to the dynasours clogging and playing their own peculiar style of clawhammer (these babies have got some claws in 'em).
We're down here in the sonic spectrum, gliding along in double low E. Man, the world is slower down here.

Here's a Greek tune in gCGCD on a Gold Tone CEB-5 five string cello banjo.
In this version I'm picking. I previously posted of a clawhammer arrangement of this piece with a made-up name of Think Greek.
A few years ago I became devoted to 5-string cello banjo and have developed a strong kinship with it.

Experiment in composition - posting from amorphous first impulse to (hopefully) a piece of music.
So the game is I'll try to evolve this in stages and post progressively as it emerges. This one's the fooling around stage - just seeing what kind of territory my fingers might want to travel in.
Please join the discussion on Sound Off. Thanks for listening.

Hello John D, Frosty Morning, Lonesome John.
Hello John D is one I heard on the New Lost City Ramblers, Gone to the Country, album back in 62. Frosty Morning I learned out of the Miles Krassen book. Lonesome John is a predecessor of Clinch Mtn Bkstep, without the hicup.

Sitar, an instrument used in North Indian classical music that I've been playing for 43 years. I studied with two great players: Dr. Shyam Yodh, in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Ustad Rais Khan in Bombay, India. This is an improvisation in Raga Kafi.

Here's a folk tune from India to which I added a bridge. In Hinduism Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, music and the arts.
Wooden banjo in gCGCD. No effects, flat EQ, stereo pair AKG-414's.

There's nothing like painting your living room gold to liven things up during the winter in the Rockies. Here's an original ditty that popped out on my 5-string cello banjo, which I do hope you'll enjoy. If you're catching it here, you might want to come over to the "Sound Off!" forum for some chit-chat. Thanks for listening.

8-string guitar (formerly 12-string) played similarly to a 5-string banjo.
Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram is a Hindu devotional song (Bhajan), very popular in India, especially as it was Mahatma Gandhi's favorite. I first heard this song sung by The Weavers.

This one I recorded several years ago. I have a couple more that I did more recently; they're quite a bit longer, but if anyone goes for this type of thing, I'd upload them.
I hope you'll go to the topic discussion if you have a comment:

I've recorded this original oriental-sounding piece before on cello banjo. This time I'm hitting the wood for a different octave and timbre. Hope you enjoy.

"Think Greek" is the same tune as my "when in greece, play the banjo" which I played on a low-tuned plectrum.

This is actually a Greek (I think) tune (although not by this hokey name) I heard a long time ago. I like to think that all good tunes somehow extend beyond the bounds of time and space.
Hope you enjoy.

One of prettiest and haunting melodies. I'm playing it as an instrumental; interpreted apart from the sad story portrayed in the lyrics of the song.
5-string Cello Banjo, tuned ADADE.
I'm playing it in double D, instead of the traditional Willie Moore tuning (GDGAD).

Wooden banjo. The Breton Tune I've played before regular banjo. The Bashful Swain is an English tune first published in Playford's Dancing Master (3rd vol.) of 1728, but this version has me taking liberties.
