Tapping the head with the resonator off, then with it on for the last 3 taps. I tapped with the meat of my fingertip about 2" in from the edge of the head.

This has been done a lot better by JD & his band, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway. The banjo is my old Fender Artist with an xnavyguy Spillway Dam bridge. I did all the vocals and instruments, so there's no one else to share the blame.

I always thought this song would sound good as bluegrass. I did all the parts so I'll take the blame if it doesn't. I used an Ashbory bass, Kentucky mandolin and my 93 Scruggs with one of xnavyguy's Hybridge Spillway dam bridges.

Warts and all (i.e. crappy singing, coming in early on the last chorus, etc.), this is my contribution to the post-a-thon for this song. Recorded with a Tascam PR10. Singing while picking my RK80 with Bart Veerman Dark Star Bridge.

Some testing of the intonation on a straight bridge, tilted, not tilted, and in the theoretical scale position, compared to a Davis compensated bridge. Please forgive my long-windedness.

This is a sample of Bart Veerman's new Dark Star bridge design on my RK80. It was recorded with a Tascam PR10 digital recorder after the bridge had about 7 hours of seating time.

This is just some noodling to demonstrate the sound of a Steve Davis compensated bridge on my Frankenbanjo (Washburn neck & flange with Jerry Rabun helix-style rim, 1st Quality tone ring and RK resonator). There are no effects or EQ used on this recording.

Written, performed and recorded by Art Horan. I wrote this tune in honor of the infusion of clarity given my el-cheapo Hondo by xnavyguy. He made a stainless steel tone hoop for it and installed it. It now sounds like a real banjo. Nice tone, with a clear ring but not an awful lot of volume. Hope you enjoy!

Written, performed and recorded by Art Horan. This was recorded with my modified Washburn B14 that xnavyguy built a Helix style Mesquite rim for. It also has a higher quality tone ring, and Jerry has modified the resonator to allow the pot to sit deeper within it. He also removed the slick finish from the inside of the resonator.

Free Big Foot Banjo Bridge drawing
Bet you've never seen a bridge like this
This is all me and my multi-track clones. I used my "Frankenburn" banjo for the first 1:50 and my Scruggs Standard for the final minute of the song (the 2nd break to the end.) The Scruggs is fitted with a Don New Bigfoot bridge and the Frankenburn with a modified Stew-mac bridge that Jerry turned the feet on to run parallel with the strings. The mic used on all tracks was an AKG Perception 120.

Excerpted from another file, this is a bit of head tapping with my fingertip about 2" in from the edge of the head with strings muffled and compared to a picked G# note on the 4th string.

Guess Which Is the Hollow Bridge - Revealed
Good digital sound recorder?
Here are 3 recordings of Home Sweet Home combined into one file, done on my RK80 with 3 different bridges. One bridge weighs 2.4 grams and the other 2 weighs 2.3. One of these is the hollow bridge made by Virgil Lawson, the other 2 are well-regarded standard bridges. Can you pick out the hollow bridge?

The "dobro" here is actually a muted bottlecap banjo played with a slide and a makeshift nut extender raising the strings.

This is a recording of three different banjos recorded with an AKG Perception 120 mic. The banjos are 1. heavily modded Washburn B14, 2. modified aluminum rim Castilla "Bottletone", 3. 1993 Gibson Scruggs Standard. The song is Lonesome Road Blues played down and up the neck.

This Don Humphries song has been done by Del McCoury and the Nashville Bluegrass Band. My version was done with an RK80 and one of xnavyguy's 5-legged bridges with the feet running parallel to the strings. The bass part was done with an Ashbory bass fitted with polyurethane strings. I'll take the blame for all the parts.

Three different versions -- are they different banjos, different setups (bridge, head tension, tailpiece), different microphones, different strings, different picks, or something else? ------
As revealed in the Three Different Somethings topic, the difference is three different sets of picks. The banjo, btw, is my old Fender Artist, Remo head at about G#, one of xnavyguy's latest BG bridges with Presto (non-original) tailpiece.

A little bit of Banks of the Ohio recorded on my RK80 with the Wyatt bridge I won in the bridge drawing here. Recorded outside on a Tascam PR10, so there's some wind noise but no room sound.
