Live Recording Of Angeline The Baker
For the past couple of years, I have been doing live recordings of a local central Texas Band. Recordings at various venues for purposes of generating a new CD that the band can sell at some of the regional festivals where they play. We just finished the master CD. This will be track 1 of the CD. This cut was recorded at Threadgill's restaurant here in Austin, during one of their weekly Sunday bluegrass brunches. The banjo is a Chuck Lee Custom, fitted with a plywood Pete Seeger, Stu Jamieson designed bridge.

Recorded this yesterday (01/01/09). My teacher Eddie Collins arrangement of this song that I will be playing at my first recital in a "safety in numbers" group. I used my trusty drummer "Casio" to help me keep a constant slow tempo that will be used in the recitial. My Fender FB-58, a Damboozler bridge, & me.

Doing a bit of banjo & resonator sound comparisons. Recorded 4 banjos, starting with Art Horan's 1993 Gibson ESS, then a Japanese Aria with a modified Helix (tm) rim and Korean bottlecap resonator, followed by the same banjo with a Mastertone style resonator and concluding with a Global brand bottlecap banjo.

One of my jam buddies asked me to work on an old Gretsch banjo that he bought in 1958. I just finished setting it up and decided to record this tune with it. I realize that the playing isn't all that great. Wanted you to hear the sound of this pot metal banjo that was built back in the 20's or 30's.

This is Blackberry Blossom played by my friend Art Horan (Roll Player) on 4 different banjos that were donated to the Wounded Warrior project where I volunteered to repair, resurrect and set up the banjos donated to the project. These were dumpster bound and I managed to get them back into playing condition. The four banjos are a converted Alvarez Tenor, a Harmony Bakelite banjo, a heavily modified no-name Korean bottlecap banjo, and an un-modified Hondo Korean bottlecap banjo.
In order they are Un-modified Hondo Bottlecap, Converted Alvarez Tenor, Heavily Modified Korean Bottlecap, Harmony Bakelite

Converting a drum shell to a banjo pot?
This is a test recording made today on my friend Art Horan's bottlecap banjo that I modified by cutting off the rim skirt and stuffing a 6 ply maple junk banjo rim inside.

This recording has 4 segments, using two different banjos. First 2 segments played on Art Horan's Washburn (Frankenburn) B-14. The second 2 segments are played on a Korean bottlecap style aluminum rim banjo. Of the two sets of segments, one is played without the cakerack and the other is played with the cakerack in the resonator.

My first bluegrass effort. Not too fast & a few missed notes. I am currently working on learning this as part of my most recent banjo lesson. These are the parts that I almost know, recorded directly onto my PC using an old Radio Shack electret condenser microphone, played on my Aria aluminum pot (student) banjo.

This is a recording that includes 6 banjos played by Art Horan (Roll Player). It is his original song called Defogger Breakdown. Three of the banjos on this recording are tone ring flat head banjos. The other 3 are aluminum rim banjos in which I have installed various types of wooden rims as inserts.

Ever since I heard this tune for the first time, I've wanted to learn to play it. It finally showed up in my lessons this month and I've (almost) learned it. This is my Aria in which I've installed a modified Helix (tm) rim that I made out of Douglas Fir. I don't think it's up to speed but it's my best effort right now, given my skill level and fear of microphones.

This was recorded today. My friend Art Horan (Roll Player) is playing the banjo that I built using the neck & hardware from my Aria student banjo and a modified Helix (TM) pot that I built out of Douglas Fir. I have dubbed this pot "Crossfire" because, when I glued the pot up, I alternated the wood grain pattern between each piece of the pot.

Made this recording today while my friend Art Horan (Roll Player) and I were doing a bit of banjo piddling. Two different banjos with identical setup parameters. One is a 1993 Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard. The other is a current model low cost Fender FB-300. Thought it interesting that, with a proper setup, even a cheap "student grade" banjo can sound pretty darn good.

Sometime back, my wife got a poem in an email that perfectly described my memory problems. I said "there ought to be a way to put some music with that". This is the result, recorded this past weekend while we were playing at a church fundraiser in La Grange, TX. I am singing & playing guitar. My friend Art Horan (Roll Player) is on banjo. Dan Ryan is on mandolin. Marsha Correira is on bass, and Jim Shaffer is on fiddle.

Noodling On A Gold Tone Cello Banjo
I have no idea about the title of this selection. I was doing some recording at a friends house last year and, while the band was taking a break, my friend Chuck Middleton was playing this on his new Gold Tone Cello banjo on which, I had earlier fitted a Pete Seeger (Stu Jamieson designed) style bridge that I had built out of plywood. It's a mono recording but I delayed the right channel 50 milliseconds to add a bit of "character". I just love the sound of this banjo in this context.

Art Horan (Roll Player) was at my house last week for a short session of bridge "fiddling". I kind of "blind sided" him while he was here and asked him to play my Fender FB-58, on which I had installed a Dam Fir bridge that I had built. We were in the backyard, the wind was howling and I captured this, using my Fostex MR-8 and the built-in microphone. I think the roll off of the high end is a function of the microphone. The banjo is quite a bit brighter in real life. Art asked me to add a little disclaimer that he wasn't prepared for this and would have practiced if he knew I was going to record it.

Recorded on my Oscar Schmidt bottlecap banjo and Art's Fender Artist to show differences in the characteristics of a poorly made Pete Seeger style bridge and 2 different Hybridge Dam bridges. The first two passages are the bottlecap banjo. The last two are the Fender Artist. Art Horan is the picker.

Performed by my friend Art Horan (Roll Player) played on my Monstertone junk parts banjo. This banjo was in pieces 4 hours before the recording was made so the parts hadn't really settled in. I hadn't fitted the resonator yet so it is duct taped onto the rim.
