Playing Since: 1975

Experience Level: Purty Good

Interests:
[Jamming] [Socializing]

Occupation: Cartoonist/illustrator

Gender: Male

Age: 62

My Instruments:
An open back Gold Tone CC Old-Time banjo.
An antique fretless banjo of unknown origin. Found on the wall of a barn in West Virginia, and I bought it on eBay. It's estimated to be from the mid- to late 1800's.
An old japanes bluegrass banjo I bought in 1975. I don't remember it's name, I have painted it over, but it sounded like some japanes motorbike. The name, that is. Not the banjo :-) It was probably Yamaha or something.
A banjo mandolin and a guitjo.
And apart from that some guitars. A Blueridge BR 143, Harmony parlor 1920, Republic parlor 2008, Washburn parlor 2008, Silvertone archtop 1960, Kentucky mandolin, old Landola mandolin from FInland, and a Gold Tone GM 6 six string guitar mandolin, a Lanikai Baritone Ukulele, a MacNally Strumstick, an autoharp, fiddle, piano, mountain dulcimer etc. etc.

Favorite Bands/Musicians:
Oh, too many to mention. Maybe later.
But Doc Watson certainly is one of them.
Though I play old time, my musical tastes are not limited to genres.
I listen to different kinds of folk music, classical, jazz, blues, cajun, zydico, bluegrass, western swing, rock, etc. etc.
Somebody said: There are two kinds of music, good and bad. It's not limited to genres.
And Tony Rice one of the greatest flatpicking guitarists has said, that one ought to listen to all kinds of music, because it will all help forming your musical identity. And I think that's true.

This is for you, fiddlerfaddler. It is my first attempt at recording anything with the fiddle, and I wouldn't have dared, if I couldn't hide a bit behind the mandolin and the guitar. Someday I will upload something with the banjo :-) I have recorded it on four tracks. Guitar, song, mandolin and fiddle. It probably would have been better if I had tried it out 20 times, but I decided on first take on all four tracks. I mean, it IS old-time, it IS folk music, and I guess that the old man in the very funny lyrics didn't play any better sitting in under his leaking roof :-) So here it is with all the faults and errors.

This is an mp3 I have burrowed from Julie Duggans website, and then added a guitar track. Julie lives in USA and I live in Denmark. So this is kind of world music. Thanks Julie, you play it very well.

Here I try to do a song I have heard on a recording with Uncle Dave Macon. Singing harmonies and using the same instruments as on the original recording. Guitjo (or 6-string banjo) and two finger picking on a 5-string banjo. I'm not much of a picker, but i do it as best I can. Hope you like it.

Today I recorded this old song, on a pocket size 4 track digital recorder. Playing a new 4 string tenor guitar, mandolin and song in the left speaker. An old Harmony parlor guitar, song and mountain dulcimer in the right speaker. I did the singing together with the two guitars, so the instruments almost drowned out the song. Sorry. But I upload it anyway. After all it's old time, and homespun music. Hope you like it.

An old song, heard on a record with Memphis Jug Band. I think from the early thirties. I play guitar and manolin, and sing harmonies with myself. The mandolin plays the harmonica part of the original recording.

This is a song I have from an old 78' recording from the 20's with Riley Puckett. With the help from the good folks at OT Muic Forum Europe an Mudcat Cafe, I have managed to get the lyrics down. It's kinda funny. The composer is Bradley Kinkaid, I have been told.

An old murder ballad. Usually there are no reason in these ballads for the young man to kill the girl he loves. No motive at all. In this one there is a motive for a change. Not a good one but a motive anyway.

I posted a recording of this song some years ago. I played guitar, mandolin and sang two voices. You can find it above this one. Now I have got a new recording device, a BOSS micro BR-80. And yesterday I tried my first experiment with it. I am not yet familiar with all the settings and stuff so this is how it fell out. It is guitar, mandolin and two voices like in the old version, but this time I have added banjo as well.

This a try at Shady Grove. I haven't actually played banjo for many years, I have mostly played guitar and mandolin, and the banjo I have played is three finger picking. I have for a long time wanted to learn clawhammer style, but it doesn't come easy to me. But here I try a teqnique I have used on the guitar in open tuning. I guess it's a little clawhammer and a lot of frailing, and yet none of these. So I guess I could call it frailing guitar style on banjo. At least it sounds like old time mountain banjo of some sort.

Here I play on my banjo for the first time in this forum, and I play the guitar too. This version of the well known song Tom Dooley, I have from A book and some recordings with one of my musical heroes, Doc Watson. He claims he have it from his grandmother, who as a child was a neighbor to the Dooley family. I like this much better, than the very popular version with the Kingston Trio. I think that was ruined (for me at least), because a danish pop quartet had a hit on danish radio with it in the late 50's, early 60's. I can't stand to listen to it today. But this one with Doc I love. Hope I haven't ruined it for you people :-) I bought the banjo in the middle of the 70's, and used the fingerpicking I had played for a long time on the guitar. I don't know if it is real Scruggs style. I have tried to learn the clawhammer style, but find it very hard to learn. So I stick to my selftought three finger picking.
