While I've played clawhammer banjo for a few years, I'm a relative beginner as far as fiddle goes, perhaps moving forward ever-so-slightly into the intermediate realm. This is a very simple (skeleton), unadorned version of "Brushy Run" that I recorded of myself in three tracks this afternoon: 1. Fiddle (center); 2. Clawhammer Banjo (left); 3. Bass (9-noter Marimbula pictured along with banjo and fiddle).

Another tune I learned through a YouTube video posted by a another BanjoHangout member from Denmark, Jesper Deleuran, a great Old Time musician and vocalist. The banjo used is a Gold Tone CC-OT. Again in 4-track, and again the Marimbula (Bass) sounds best with headphones/earbuds rather than laptop speakers.

Light clawhammer accompaniment on this one, along with the other instruments/tracks: Vocal and Guitar; Bass; Clawhammer Banjo; Hammered Dulcimer. Not sure if this one is normally considered to be of the Old Time or just the Folk / Blues genre. In any case, Henry Thomas wrote a great song in "Bob McKinney."

4 Tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Deering Goodtime) and lead vocal, guitar and backup vocal, hammered dulcimer, mandolin chops and backup vocal. This is a version of the tune that is played by a great banjo player, originally from West Virginia I believe, Fred Coon, who learned the tune as a young man from one of the Old Time greats, Aunt Jenny Wilson. She probably learned it from listening to the Carters.

Most versions of Cherokee Shuffle contain 8 measures in Part A and 10 in Part B. This one contains 10 measures in both A and B, with a return to the F#minor chord during the extra 2 measures in Part A. Some Old Timers play it this way, although it's not very common. I prefer the tune played this way; gives it a more "Old Timey" sound from my perspective. For a great fiddle/string band version of the tune played this way, see the YouTube link of the UCLA Bluegrass and Old Time String Band with special guest Tommy Stanton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-5DLDmiZro 4 tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Gold Tone CC-OT) melody and guitar bounced to track 1; Bass track 2; Three-Finger Rhythm Banjo track 3; Hammered Dulcimer track 4. As always, with headphones/earbuds, you'll be able to pick up the bass, whereas probably not with laptop speakers.

Recorded myself in four tracks: Fiddle, Clawhammer Banjo, Bass, and Guitar. 6X through, enough to be able to get myself in the groove! I love this particular "crooked" tune (of sorts), as I usually do all tunes of the crooked variety. When listening with a laptop, sounds best with headphones/earbuds.

Just a cover of Abigail Washburn's tune and rendition (Uncle Earl) of her song "Coffee's Cold" and the Traditional "Tater Patch." Recorded myself today in five tracks: Clawhammer Banjo and Lead Vocal, Bass, Guitar rhythm, Fiddle 1 and Fiddle 2.

Found this great tune through another forum member, Jesper Deleuran, a terrific Old Time musician/singer from Denmark. This version I recorded myself using 4-track: Simple Frailing Banjo and lead vocal; Marimbula (bass, which you'll need earbuds for rather than just laptop speakers); Guitar and harmony vocal; Hammered Dulcimer. It's one of those great tunes where the first phrase of the verse begins not with a I chord, but with a IV chord (my favorite chord structure for a tune).

Just a very crudely played version of "Hangman's Reel" to illustrate how small, narrow magnetic strips fashioned from a simple business-card-size magnet, such as the kind people typically keep on a refrigerator, can be placed above and below a banjo's five strings to produce an Old-Time, plunky sound. I've used a Deering Special Classic banjo, admittedly with the standard frosted head a bit looser than at its brightest setting, for the first half of the recording, and the same banjo in the second half of the recording with the magnetic strips in place.

I'd not thought of this as a potential instrumental tune until I heard, about 12-13 years ago, Martin Simpson's fingerstyle guitar version on one of his albums. In this case, I'm playing an Ome Wizard open back (aDADEplaying in Dminor) to carry the melody for track 1, a Marimbula (Michael Allen, Cloud Nine Instruments) to handle the bass on track 2, and I'm playing a Goodall MdRGCC (tuned to DADGAD) for rhythm guitar on track 3.

Not too much exciting banjo on this one -- basically just a strum on one banjo and some (plain fingers, no picks) three-finger for rhythm on another banjo. Recorded myself in four tracks: Vocal and Banjo strum; Bass; Fiddle; and Three-Finger Banjo. Will have to try this one in a couple of jam groups I play music with.

A lazy, slow Clawhammer Banjo / Old Time version of a Celtic tune, a version based on the excellent arrangement and performance of fingerstyle guitarist Steve Baughman from his album "The Angel's Portion." Clawhammer banjo on track 1, bass on track 2, hammered dulcimer on track 3.

Two Old Time tunes, Liza Jane and Hangman's Reel, played in A, based on Brad Kolodner's versions. Recorded in 4 tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Gold Tone CC-OT) and Guitar bounced to track 1; Bass, track 2; Three-Finger Rhythm Banjo, track 3; Hammered Dulcimer, track 4. Use the headphones/earbuds to pick up the bass.

Just some basic "down home" clawhammer in which I recorded myself in 4-tracks: 1: Ramsey "Woody" clawhammer banjo; 2: Martin 00-28VS rhythm; 3: Marimbula (bass); 4: Hammered Dulcimer. As always, use headphones/earbuds in order to hear the bass, rather than just laptop speakers.

My versions of several tunes done as a Frailing Tunes Medley: June Apple / Red-Haired Boy / Old Joe Clark / McDonald County. You'll need earphones or better-than- laptop-speakers to hear the Marimbula Bass. 4-Tracks: Deering Goodtime Special tuned to A; Guitar (Martin 00-28VS); Marimbula (made by Michael Allen, ~Cloud Nine~); very slight Hammered Dulcimer (also made by Michael Allen).

A medley of three "New Old Time" tunes ("Otter Creek," "Ithacan Ash," and "Rocky Beaches") from the father and son team of Ken and Brad Kolodner CD "Otter Creek" that I recorded of myself playing three tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Ome Wizard tuned to Double D tuning), Bass (Michael Allen Cloud Nine 9-Noter Marimbula), and Hammered Dulcimer (Michael Allen Cloud Nine 15/14 model). All three tunes were composed by Brad Kolodner, certainly one of the best of a new generation of Clawhammer Banjo players and composers. This recording I made of myself this morning replaces one I made two days ago, as I just was not satisfied with the earlier performance. My standard qualifier applies: Listen with headphones/earbuds to help bring out the bass.

A different tune than "Polly Put the Kettle On." Great crooked tune, since although it is typically written out in 4/4, it contains an extra 2/4 measure in the middle of Part B. Recorded myself in four tracks: Clawhammer Banjo, Bass (probably will need headphones to hear), Rhythm Guitar, Fiddle.

Recorded in four tracks: Fiddle lead (center), Clawhammer Banjo (left), Bass (center), Guitar (right). This is another one I've heard played several ways, and this is just a simple, unadorned, basic version. Pretty much the way it sounds when I play it on fiddle in one of my jam groups.

A "cover" of "Mary Z. (and Bob) Cox's 'cover'" of the McGee Brothers banjo tune, recorded by me in three tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Ome Wizard), Bass (Marimbula by Michael Allen), and Guitar (Martin 00-28VS). When I attended the Swannanoa Fingerstyle Guitar week about five years ago, I really became interested in music played at the Old Time jams in the evenings and resolved, after playing music (with people such as Mary Z. and Bob Cox) -- especially this tune -- to learn Clawhammer Banjo. I became so enamored of Old Time Music that I've pretty much abandoned fingerstyle guitar -- way too boring. This was one of the first clawhammer tunes I taught myself. The tune is in three parts; listen (preferably with earphones/buds) for the bass and guitar to come in immediately prior to part B. Not quite as good as Brad Kolodner's (and Ken's as well) version. This is a favorite tune of a guitar-playing jam pal-friend, Bernie T.

One of my favorite instrumental Old Time tunes. Similar to Jesper Deleuran's Big Hungry Joe (favorite Old Time Band, and from Denmark) version, except tuned to key of A (G tuning capoed up two frets. Recorded myself in 4 tracks: Banjo, Bass, Guitar, Fiddle. As someone else has mentioned before, the three parts of the song (A, B, C) always remind me of: A. The release of the fox; B. The dogs chasing the fox; and C. the cornering of the fox.

There are several great renditions of this song/tune on the Banjo and Fiddle Hangouts, and after listening to an outstanding fiddle rendition of this tune a couple of nights ago played by Jon Anderson on the Fiddle Hangout (Sound Off section), I wanted to try this often-played tune/song and record a version as well. In this case I recorded and mixed four tracks: Vocal and Clawhammer Banjo, Fiddle, Bass, and Hammered Dulcimer.

Granted, perhaps about the 10,000th cover of this tune, but a version that sounds very much as it does when a couple of our our jam groups play it. Recorded just myself in 4 tracks: "Strummin' Banjo (Vega Senator) and lead vocal, Guitar and harmony vocal, Hammered Dulcimer, and Three-Finger Banjo (Vega Senator) and harmony vocal. Wish I had had the Marimbula (bass box that sounds like an upright bass) when I recorded this.

A old slow waltz tune that, based on reports available, may have originated in Poland, was brought to Texas, and was played widely as a fiddle tune. A revision of an earlier version submitted to the Hangout to include some bass (requires headphones / earbuds instead of laptop speakers) and to remove the psaltery that was on the original recording. My wife is playing the melody on her hammered dulcimer.

Sorry this doesn't feature too much clawhammer banjo (used as backup on one track, however). Dull here on a very cold snowy day! So I downloaded from Soundcloud an mp3 recording from an Old Time / BanjoHangout / Facebook friend/acquaintance of mine (Jesper Deleuran, who is a professional cartoonist and Old Time and Folk musician) from Denmark, “Dreadful Wind and Rain.” Jesper is also a member here on the BanjoHangout and has posted several tunes. He’s doing the vocal and playing a couple of guitars. I decided to load it into a modest $150 four-track recorder and added bass, Clawhammer banjo, and hammered dulcimer to it, sent it back to him, and the result it attached. So this is a recording that’s traveled about 8,200 miles from start to finish.

4-tracks: Deering Goodtime Special tuned to A and Vocal; Guitar (Martin 00-28VS); Marimbula (Bass); Hammered Duclcimer (built by Michael Allen, ~Cloud Nine Instruments~). Again, you'll need headphones/earbuds (rather than laptop speakers) to pick up the bass of Michael Allen's Marimbula I recently purchased.
