I heard BlackJack played by JD Crowe on You Tube and this is just me playing it as close as I could to JD. Studying the masters, you know. Just picked it up by ear and went with it. I like this song. It is so.....well....Banjoesque.

This is a newer version. I think this really came out good.
A band in the making. This is "From out of the Desert". The players are Rick Seligman, fiddle. John Lundmark, guitar. Tim Howe, bass and me. John is singing lead and me on harmony.

This is a song I wrote in 1984. I am playing the Martin Vega Earl Scruggs Banjo that is shown on the collectors corner/martin vega forum. I'm also singing and the band is The Skyline Drifters.

This is one where I just let the old Zoom Recorder run and took what I got. I hope to do this in our band soon. I love how the fiddle works with this song when I heard Steve's version. I guess this is an Irish tune then, Eh? I didn't know I could do Irish.

Out of the Desert is working on a CD project and this is a first mix of How Mountain Girls Can Love. John Lundmark on guitar and harmony vocals, Rick Seligman on fiddle, Jon Meek on Dobro and Brian Burns on bass and bass vocals. I'm singing the lead and playing banjo.

Midnight on the Water is a beautiful old cross-tuned fiddle waltz. It was written by Luke Thomasson, Benny Thomasson's Grandfather.
It is so simple and beautiful and here is my shot at playing it.
Didn't know what to put as "playing style" but it's 3 fingers style without picks.

This is one I heard by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band more than 30 years ago. This is Out of the Deserts version. We don't do it very much like NGDB did it.
They were more electrified in their version. Hard to say what style this is.

This is an original song by Seattle's Pete Martin. A top notch mandolin and fiddle player. We were playing in the Seattle based band The Skyline Drifters. Recorded in approx 1984. The players on this instrumental are Pete Martin on mandolin and harmony mandolin on his second break, Jane Barwell on lead flat picking guitar, Julie (Jo) Miller on rhythm guitar, Greg Glassman on fretless bass, and me on my Vega Earl Scruggs Model Banjo. I think the banjo sounds a little dull tone wise in this recording but I was very proud of what I thought was a pretty innovative banjo break for the time.
This was transferred from a warped vinyl record to digital and then to mp3 so there is some hum. Sorry

What is Soldiers Joy? I first was told that it is LIBERTY. You know. A soldiers vacation. 3 day pass. R&R.
Another story I heard lead to this version of Soldiers Joy that I have recorded.
The story goes that Civil War Soldiers were getting strung out on Morphine. Soldiers went to such lengths as inflicting injuries on themselves to get more morphine.
The happy bouncy part of the music is how I picture a soldier would feel under the influence of the morphine but then look for the suprise ending put in to depict how it might have been when the soldier came to his senses and saw what was around him. Hope you like it.

This is "Out of the Desert" Playing at a little BBQ out here in Boulder City. The food was good and the friends and good times were even better. We are still working out these arrangements and I missed some things here and there but overall, I had a great time and see good potential for this little group. Let me know how you like it. P.S......Wanted...Mandolin player that sings and lives in the Las Vegas area. Where are ya Man?

Now here's one you don't hear every day. I learned this from Lou Martin, a clarinet player in Seattle while I was playing on the streets with the Dynamic Logs. Seems like a hundred years ago.
Of course I know that "The Bird" was what Charlie Parker (legendary, style setting icon of the saxophone) was called. Charlie "Bird" Parker.
The question is....and I don't know the answer...did he write this song or did someone write it about him.
Let me know what you think.

I heard Sam Bush and David Grisman play this as a mandolin duet (no vocals) and it was so beautiful it makes you want to cry just to realize the feeling they are able to put in to their music. Before the song started Sam and David were talking about the first time Sam had heard this song. He says it was in 1965 at the Roanoke Bluegrass festival in Thincastle Virgina. It was sung by Bill Monroe and Peter Rowan. Sam said "it just knocked me over" Then David asked Sam how old he was at that time. 13 said Sam. Well.....every version I've heard from David and Sam's to Emmy Lou Harris and most everyone else had sent a shiver through my spine.
Now I'm no great singer but we are giving it a try here. Just wanted to share a great song with you.
