Adrian's Hornpipe was recorded by great Missouri fiddler Bob Walters. I was happy to play and record this nice tune on January 10th at Rhys Jones' house in Warrenton, VA. This was my first time out on this tune and I chose 3-finger style, which is appropriate for a Missouri Valley tune.

This is a recording--off the radio--of a live performance of The New York Ramblers at the Second Fret in Philadelphia in 1965. At this time the Ramblers consisted of David Grisman-mandolin, Steve Arkin-banjo, Jim Field-guitar, and Julie Silber-bass. This concert was recorded by Pete Peterson (currently of the Orpheus Supertones) and his roommate at the time, Dave Howard (formerly of The Lazy Aces and Southern Schoolhouse Rascals).

I learned this terrific tune from Bruce Greene--but I don't remember who his source was. Here I'm playing it on a very windy 4th of July weekend at the Sassafras in Cecilton MD with Rafe Stefanini (fiddle) and Nikki Lee (guitar). Rick Martin was also fiddling in that session, but not on this tune (nor on The Rebel's Raid, which I also posted here). It's not a particularly tidy rendition on any of our parts, but I like it anyway.

This interesting song was recorded back in the day by the Sweet Brothers of Virginia. At the Clifftop Trad Band Finals in 2005, my band (Troublesome Creek) was preceded by a group called Old Missouri with Rhys Jones and Christina Wheeler fiddling. They played this song and we liked it so much that we recorded it on our County CD (Fast As Time Can Take Me). I was happy to get to play (and record) this peppy rendition with Rhys on January 10 at his house in Warrenton, VA.
Fiddle and vocal--Rhys Jones

Originally recorded by Freeny's Barn Dance Band. This rendition was recorded at Rhys Jones' house in Warrenton, VA on January 10th. I thought we were pretty amazingly "locked in" on this tune--affording me the opportunity to gamble on a variety of approaches to playing the high part.

Moonlight is a Kentucky tune. I don't know the source, but I believe it was collected by Bruce Greene. I've heard that the source recording was in the key of D, but everyone I know who plays it (and there aren't many) plays it in A. I recorded this in a jam with Palmer and Greg Loux at their home in PA this last Saturday (5/15/10). Palmer Loux-fiddle; Steve Arkin-3-finger banjo, Greg Loux-guitar. There's a cell phone ring at the end--the Louxes son was calling them.

Nice 3-part C tune from Bob Walter; there's also a version from Casey Jones (the fiddler; not the engineer). Pardon the recording quality, but I like the drive of John Hoffmann's fiddle--a challenge to match him on banjo. This performance by Lightning in the East was recorded at the 2007 Park Slope Jamboree. John Hoffmann-fiddle; Steve Arkin-banjo; Erica Weiss-guitar.

This is a great tune from Benton Flippen. It was recorded in 2002. The lineup is: Steve Arkin-clawhammer banjo; Palmer Loux-fiddle; Greg Loux-guitar. Every now and again some 3-finger-style licks creep into my clawhammer playing--although I try to resist the temptation. This was just such an occasion.

Derek Halsey sent me this recording of an interview he conducted with Steve Martin on the day after Pete Wernick and I spent many hours coaching Steve for his (then) upcoming tour to promote his banjo CD, The Crow. In it Steve discussed his love of clawhammer banjo and he talks about the fact that I brought my IPod and played a number of my favorite clawhammer heroes for him. He was especially taken with Adam Hurt (although he forgot Adam's last name). He also said kind things about Pete and me (go figure).

This tune was originally collected by Alan Lomax in a 1937 recording of William Stepp or Salyerville, KY. I read somewhere that other fiddlers in the region called this tune "Who's Been Here Since I've Been Gone"--so maybe Lomax messed up on his data--or maybe not, But the name Ways of the World has stuck.

Peggy Seeger is said to have learned this pretty song (with just the first verse) around a campfire in the early '50;s. I believe she added the additional verses.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! Here's a nice romantic version of an old-time classic from a January 10th session at Rhys Jones' House in Warrenton, VA (I posted four other tracks but saved this one for V-Day). Notice that, on this and the other two songs, Rhys has gotten really good at playing the fiddle and singing at the same time.
Fiddle and vocals--Rhys Jones
3-finger banjo--Steve Arkin
Guitar and vocals--Jason Ashby
