Another great tune from the 70's. Bill is a great singer, songwriter and this is one of his best I think. I'm on comping banjo, guitar, baritone and tenor banjo parts and the lead banjo is played with bare fingers and a mute. Some reverbs, volume edits, panning and EQing. Done on Audition.

My funky blues version of the classic fiddle tune. This is for my contribution to the thread about this tune on the Sound-off forum. This ain't your mama's version, so be warned..lol
The tune is also known as Black Mt Blues and my version definitely has the blues oozing in it. But it wouldn't have funked nearly as much without John Kuhn (AKA the 'Kidd') adding his percussion and bass lines! He also did all the mixing.

An original composition about one of the highest elevation points in this part of Surry county,NC and near to my house. This is the first time its been recorded in a band context. I recorded it earlier on a fiddle/banjo duet album. This is with the Rain Check Band-Alan Conrad on Guitar, Dennis Severt on manolin,Jack Steelman on Bass and me on banjo/reso. Hope you like it.

Heres my 6 banjo version. I matched the tempo and the arrangement as closely as I could. But my jazzy solo in the middle is my own..good or bad, haha. I snuck in a hook riff from a 007 movie for laughs. This has rhythm banjo, two brushed banjos, banjo ornaments, banjo solo and bass banjo. I hope you like it.

Ok, I was going to come up with a crazy Reggae version of this, but decided to keep it straight to honor Ralph more, for such a great tune. But, being 'me', I tuned in open B tuning and threw in a couple of my twists on the B part...couldn't help myself...lol.
No reverb, metronome or other stuff here...just me and the banjo

From the upcoming 'Rain Check' CD project. One of Jackson Brownes' best tunes, I think. Your truly on banjo/reso/tenor vocal, Jack Stillman - Bass,Alan Conrad,Guitar lead vocal and Dennis Severt mando/baritone vocal. Recorded at Stu Bowen's studio in King NC.

Here's a cut from a local mandolin players solo CD. I played Dobro and Banjo on a few cuts. Here's a cut with my old Flathead. She sounds great and Westley Easter is the man with mic placement. I think Darrel Webb and Junior Sisk were on vocals with Brad Wood singing lead (he's the CD owner). Cant remeber who sang bass.

Another original from an older Cd."Fiddle and Banjo". Glen Alexander on fiddle. I named this after a local Indian landmark..otherwise known to the white man as "Pilot Mountain". Ther are a few bad note chioces in the banjo second break, but we did this whole albulm live with one take only, so as long as it didnt ruin the whole performance, we left it all in there.

A version I thought up this week before Christmas. I used two banjo tracks, one rhythm banjo and one lead, using a homemade mute. I like the staccato effect on the banjos. John Kuhn (aka the Kidd) added some bass, synth string sounds and a conga. You can tell how much I love flamenco guitar, and it somehow wound up influencing this, in my banjo version. This is a great song and i hope my version doesn't detract from it.

Heres my banjo take on the Christmas favorite. I've always loved Vince Guaraldi's version that was featured in Charlie Browns Christmas cartoon. This one has 5 banjos and I used a Keyboard cleaning brush, on the banjo head, to get the brushed sounds from the original recording, haha. Add a bass banjo track with the tuning dropped 3 whole steps and you get a pretty nice sounding bass string, haha. This was a fun project .

How playing 8th note rolling patterns would sound at 126 BPM, for Earls version of FireBall mail, which was the original recorded tempo. Then, the same solo played as 16th note patterns over the same 4/4/ count. They are not the same, obviously.

Im glad it got used. I played an orginal RB-1 on this cut. Too bad I sold it in France months after this was recorded. Oh well, al least I got a recording of the jo...snif,snif..

My version of The Steely Dan classic. Im a huge SD fan and always wanted to work up a 'full blown' version with acoustic instruments and percussion. I was glad The Kidd decided to provide me with drums, guitar and all the mixing. He also added his banjo and we had fun working this all out. Check out my triple banjo threat-haha. My reso gets a chance to participate too. Thanks!
