Two months down...can play two songs...need help at jams!

It's been an exciting experience playing the banjo these last two months!. I have met some amazing, kind banjo players who are so willing to share their wisdom. I have also felt challenged and had a lot of fun. The hardest part....going to jam sessions! I have been to three so far and feel really inadequate when I get there. I have been learning by Tabs and everyone there tells me that that is not the way to learn banjo. I have been downloading the oldtime songs so that I can sing along and learn the chords. Any advice? Should I wait until I get good to go to jams?
