Chicago and Home

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 @8:55:09 AM

Our final stop before heading home was Chicago. We first went to Shure, the microphone people.  My old friend Stu works there, and we don't get to visit all that often. Stu not only introduced me to my lovely bride, but was my best bud in high school and junior high. He plays banjo and guitar too, so it was fun to introduce him to Tom.

We traversed through Old Town in search of a hotel room. Once we got to the Old Town School of Folk Music Store, we got a referral for a room at the Day's Inn, not far from the school. We booked it over the phone, and went back to pick up Stu.

Deep dish pizza at Burt's pizza with Tom and Stuart VanDorn.
Stu took us to a hole in the wall called Burt's where we had the most amazing pizza. And this comes from one who is not usually fond of deep dish. You have to call ahead and order over the phone. And you have to do it right. Soup Nazi?

Back through Old Town, past the music store to Day's Inn. Traffic was heavy, but we eventually found our way there, and called it a night shortly after taking Stu's banjo apart and then reassembling it.

The Old Town School of Folk Music is one amazing place. For decades, they have held classes, workshops, private lessons and concerts. They walk the walk in their commitment to education and traditional music. Our visit was to Different Strummer, their in-house music store.

The workshop went well, and we enjoyed visiting with the store staff. They know their stuff, and as the workshop was taking place, they deftly helped the folks who wandered in to shop. Before we were done, I had a new gig bag and some new picks to take home.

After the workshop, Tom was ready to drive to his home in Minnesota, and I tossed my bags into Stu's car. I enjoy working with Tom and it will now be several months until we get the chance to do so in person. Its always good to hang with Tom.

Do they still play the blues in Chicago, when baseball season rolls around.
Stu knew what I wanted to see in Chicago. So off we went to Wrigley Field. We drove all around it, but found a parking place outside centerfield.

Kitty corner from there was Harry Caray's Bar & Grill. There we had a great lunch while watching a dozen college football games at once. The food was good, the beer was cold, but it was time to head to the airport for the trip home, armed with memories and souvenirs for the grandkids.
Only one of us can truly be Harry in this photo
