Just returned form the 2009 Ross Nickerson's "Banjo Cruise" seminar. WOW...Where to start. First of all Ross is not only one of the nicest most accommodating people I've ever met, he is the consummate professional at pickin the banjo. The seminar gave me incite to improving my progress on the banjo far beyond what I believed could have been absorbed by my gray matter. Ya see, Ross remembers being RIGHT where you are and knows how to get you off of that plateau or frustrating hurtle holding you back. He causes you to see the problem that has been staring you right in the face, then offers the way around it because he's been there done that.. The most incredible solid teaching skill I've ever encountered. I've improved quite a bit by simply following the advice given at the cruise seminar and applying it to Ross's books and other material. I can't speak highly enough of Ross and I'm speaking as a person who owns at least one book or DVD by all of the major producers of such material. Janet Davis, Murphy Henry , Geoff Hohwald, etc. etc. While all of the aforementioned provide excellent instruction, and I've learned something from each, I haven't found anyone who has the down to earth approach and ability to move you along as quickly as Ross does. His instruction method will quickly move you forward from Cripple Creek and Boil Em Cabbage Down. Now this of course is my humble opinion but by golly it's a very strong one. Give Ross's instruction a try if you already haven't. If you buy only one instructional book on learning to play the banjo Ross's "The Banjo Encyclopedia" is the one you should have. It's in there.
