JLS ring

Recently purchased  a JLS12 ring for my banjo, I have for a while felt the original gibson ring was not all that good being a lightwieght type. The rim (Tony PAss) had been machined to fit the Gibson ring like a glove however when I went to install the JLS I found the ring to be a VERY loose fit with a fair bit of sideways play, also the skirt didnt quite reach the lip on the rim. The top of the ring sat nicely on the rim, I was hoping/expecting to have to machine the rim a bit to get a good fit...not need to ADD to it!!!! Anyway I fitted it and it sounded terrible, I was pissed, a few quick emails to T.Pass and Jim Stull who both advised me that  a bit of sideways play wasnt a big issue as long as the top of the ring and bottom of the skirt sat squarely on the rim, as I said the skirt seemed a fraction high but once the stretched bolts were in it all pulled into place. I tuned the head to a g# and it sounded OK, over the next week or so the tone improved and is now playing quite nicely IMHO. I still think about machining off the top section of the rim and fitting a new section and then machining that to a PERFECT fit, but I dunno, I will wait and let a few people play it and get their feedback...stay tuned!
