Neck progress and my first mistake :-(
Monday, April 16, 2012 @3:20:42 AM
I had a sneaky look at the neck this morning, without the clamps, and it all seems good - it's glued together nicely and it all lines up fairly well.

It's become apparent quite quickly that my first mistake was in cutting the 2 profiles separately and then glueing them together - next time I'll definitely do the glueing first and then I'll cut the profile.
I can see some long evenings with a plane, chisel and sandpaper before I start to shape the neck.

when I glue mine up I drill a hole for a dowl rod on each end in the off cut area. I cut the peg head (face side) on a table saw and the rest on the band saw after it is glued up and dried at least 24 hours. I leave the neck to cure for at least 3 months before I go any farther so there will not be anymore movement in the wood. There are several sites on the web that show how to build a banjo, look for Hickler banjos it is a good site. Best of luck Gary C |
