My Instruments: Was taught in school on the Violin, although I haven't picked it up in decades....Self taught guitar, banjo current (work in progress) and own a mandolin. Would love to be good at all of them, but then who would pay the bills? haha. I can find my way around a keyboard, too.

My first jam! Scared Stiff
Friday, June 08, 2012 @1:03:20 PM
Well, I did it! I went to my first jam. There were 4 guitars, 4 banjos, 2 mandolins a bass, and an electric guitar. I was mostly in the back, learning the songs, but I knew the chords and tried to hear myself play. Towards the end of the evening we did Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and although I have severe stage fright, I got up front and after I fumbled, I got thru it. Whew! got that over with. After that I was able to do It Takes A Worried Man as our last song much easier. Although after we ended, I found out that I had left my 5th string under the 1st spike!
But in the end, my confidence improved and hopefully will be better next month. I was terrified in the beginning, but was grinning all the way home in the end. Wow! What an experience!

Congrats Mike! I went to my first one last month and can relate completelty with your post. I'm going back tomorrow night, hoping I breathe a little more during the session than I did last time! |

Congrats. Yea, that darn fifth string, never seems to be where it is supposed to be, eh. Done a number of tunes, even on stage, where I took the capo off to play a G tune, but forget to unhook the fifth. It works with other instruments around you, most in audience would never know. |

It is kind of ironic that you played "Worried man blues" last.....Ha! I have terrible stage fright..but it gets better every time I "get up" Glad you are doing it. You will get loads of great practice from jamming with others. Good luck!

it is great that you got through your first jam, it is a great feeling, just remember that the more experanced players started just like you at one time, so they know what di going on. good luck on the next jam. |

Thanks for all the words of encouragement!!! I'm always looking for jams, or even someone who is willing to play guitar just so I can play the banjo. Always looking forward to getting home and practicing! |
