Irish Jigs transform to Old time Reels
Sunday, August 09, 2009 @12:20:43 PM
Hello everyone. I found this site by listening to Hillarie Burhams playing "Pretty Little Dog" on YouTube and then finding her blogs and music here.
My main music is trad. Irish and I only dabble in old-time music. But recently I have "discovered" that by adding extra beats to nearly any Irish jig that I know to play it as a clawhammer reel, it will come out as a great american-sounding oldtime reel.
I'll upload a few examples. The first one is a common session tune "The Cliffs of Moher" that transforms into one of my favorite modal banjo tunes. I'll be interested to hear any comments on it. (I just recorded it with an EDIROL R-1 I was given about five years ago, sitting in my dining room, with my wife making noises in the adjacent kitchen.)
