Never Could Color Within the Lines

Friday, April 17, 2009 @7:49:54 AM

I played a show last night with a truly fine young, rising superstar in the world of Celtic Traditional Music.

Julie Fowlis sings in Scots Gaelic and her band plays very trad sounding, old Scots and Irish music on Bouzouki, Guitar and Fiddle. Julie also plays whistle and bagpipes.

So when I planned out my set for the evening, I thought contrast was in order. I brought out my banjo and played some Scottish and Irish stuff in Scruggs and in Seeger finger-style. My son Jaime joined me on mandolin and I played some guitar too, but I kind of enjoyed the wide gap of styles within the related subjects of Celtic folk music between Julie and us.

We were blood relatives, musically - but obviously distant cousins! Being the "red-headed step child" sort of guy, I enjoyed turning up the contrast. I never could stay within the lines.
