Here's a little Snowdrop. Just wanted to let everyone know that I'll be teaching a new class for banjoists that can already play at the JC Campbell School next April. If you have taken a class from me there before--or if you already play pretty well--this may be the class for you. We will be focusing on new tunes and techniques to make your playing stronger and more diverse--plus--we are going to have a whole lot of fun. :)

INTERMEDIATE CLAWHAMMER BANJO: EXPAND YOUR TECHNIQUES

Share: Eager to drop-thumb with the right hand and creep up the neck on the first and second strings like the old-time banjo players? If you already frail and can play a few clawhammer banjo tunes, but would like to strengthen your right- and left-hand technique while learning new tunes, join us for a very hands-on class to stretch your playing. We may even try a waltz, and sing while playing a tune, too! Levels 3 & 4 (Can play 10 or more tunes, perhaps not up to tempo, but you feel very comfortable with the instrument.)

Tuition: $532.00 Deposit: A deposit of $150.00 will be due upon checkout to hold your seat in this class.
@tkocason: not my point at all. I enjoy and respect both Mary's playing and her contributions to the hangout. However, the whole point of the various groups is to have a place to discuss issues relevant to those groups. Admittedly, what counts as relevant is a bit subjective. But posting links to one's commercial venture to every group one belongs to (a couple dozen in this case), regardless of purpose of those groups, comes off to me as "spammy", and it unnecessarily dilutes the quality of those groups. If every time someone posted a classified ad, or anything else, to the hangout they indiscriminately linked it to every group they belonged to then the groups would quickly become completely useless.
Hey--trying to let as many of my former students know about this class as possible because it is not a beginning class--and most of my students from the last ten years--not only play pretty good--but also buy quality banjos--and know some of them have lovely Romeros. People change their emails, names, addresses all the time these days--sometimes the best way to find them is through their banjos. :) Actually, I'm registered with less than a dozen groups--and did not send this notice to all of them. Please remember that although my recordings eventually break even and make a profit--the books and instruction are essentially labors of love and that my dear husband often picks up the expense of producing these and paying transportation so that instruction will be available. We do this mainly because we have enjoyed my students so much. I don't usually give individual lessons locally and do not have a music store to advertise. It is true that a Romero banjo does not currently live at my home--but it is possible one may arrive in the future :) And--since they have so many lovely models--do want to encourage any students that have Romeros to come because--we want to see them and play them :)

Sorry to be sticking my nose in here.....Mary is more than capable of handling this herself, but I have to side with her on this one! Your Romero group has about a dozen posts in the last 2 months......the Groups I'm in have maybe 6 posts. This is exactly the kind of thing that should be on an open back banjo group......I only wish there was there were more posts, it's almost like the groups are dead......lighten up!......there's not that many Marys out there doing the job for all of us! Okay, I feel better. Sorry again, I know this is none of my business, just trying to understand.
I'm not trying to get into a pi$$ing match here and, as I said, I really do appreciate your (Mary's) contribution to the community, which is far greater than my own. By my count, you linked your commercial post to 29 of the 36 different groups you are subscribed to (not stalking either, this is easily seen from one's homepage). All I am saying is this feels a bit like spam to me and seems not in the spirit of the groups, regardless of how active each group might be. How much money you make or how much you enjoy your students seems immaterial to the point. I only subscribe to a few groups and, the relatively high signal to noise of content linked to them is one of the benefits of having them in the first place. If I get an email alert telling me something has been linked to the hide head group, then I will go read it thinking that the post has something to do with hide heads (one of my interests) not that it is something completely unrelated. If people frequently linked unrelated things then I wouldn't bother to check at all. I don't mean to be overly complaining about my one experience in particular; I'm hardly wounded by Mary's post. I just think that overall the site functions better when used as intended.
Perhaps others see the matter differently, which is their right, so I'll have nothing more to say on the matter. Mary, good luck with your class.
