If it's 60 years old, the metalwork look to be in extremely good condition; the tuning pegs seem to be replacements. What makes you think it's American (not doubting you, just wonder if you saw something)? Most 20th century banjos in original condition will have a name or serial number somewhere. Have you looked on the back of the dowel stick? Could this possibly be a composite of parts from multiple makers?

Ger, what you have there is a Clifford Essex Paragon.....worth maybe a couple of grand! Made in England, plenty of info available on the internet. You also shouldn't be posting questions in a blog...click on Forums to the left of the screen, then "Collectors Corner", then start a new topic. Plenty of photos would help, closeup of the peghead, photo of the back of body and neck. Good find!!
