New to Banjo Hangout and new to banjo
Friday, August 10, 2012 @2:20:35 PM
Every summer, for the past few years, I have tried to read as much as possible. It's turned into my summer hobby. However, after this school year (I am a student), I decided I would try a different summer hobby. I came across a string-less five-string banjo at my in-laws house and asked if I could have it for the summer, I strung it up, tuned it, and have started to learn at a less than beginner level. I have absolutely loved it.
My progress can be annoyingly slow, but my small achievements have made learning the banjo one of my favorite things to look forward to each day.
I don't have goals of joining a band or reaching banjo god status, I just want to increase in my knowledge and skill of this most awesome instrument.

Welcome to the Hangout. Feel free to ask questions on the appropriate forum for the type of music you want to play. You'll probably get more answers and help than you wished for. |

Welcome Charles to the wonderful world of banjo. It will more than likely turn into an obsession, if you are like most here. Most of all just have fun with it and remember it is a journey with no destination or end. |

Welcome Charles. The BHO is a cool place with all the resources available to help you master the ole 5 string. Have you decided what style of playing you are going to pursue? There are lots of videos here and on YouTube to help you decide. Good Luck! |

Thanks everyone. @BanjoFlyboy: I haven't decided what style to pursue yet. Although, the "clawhammer" style is easier for me than the "scruggs" style. I am finding that within clawhammer, there are various techniques and different ways to play. The frailing/drop thumb is one I'm trying to figure out. |
