Here I go!
Wednesday, July 18, 2012 @5:46:28 AM
I have been playing the banjo for three weeks now and....I love it! This is definitely a challenging instrument. My only experience with music is grade school clarinet- MUCH different. I am asking your advice on two subjects: 1) what is the best open back 5-string banjo and 2) can you lead me to a great banjo gospel book? I love old time songs and bluegrass. I am torn between the Deering Goodtime Special (open back with a tone ring), the Gold Tone WL 250+, or the Morgan Monroe open back. Your thoughts?

You should go look at all of them and decide which sound you like the best. Setup has a lot to do with getting the sound right. I love my White ladye. It has a renassaince head and the tone ring is great. Go on Gold tone's website and they have sound bites of each of their banjos. Look at the OT 800 too. It is a tubaphone. Check out member: "ericforgod" on this site and listen to his vids on his Goodtime Crow. banjohangout.org/myhangout/vid...rID=65260 All the Goodtimes are beautifully made and sound great. Take your time and look at them all. |

Thanks for your response. I love your picture with your banjo! I went to Elderly Instruments yesterday and got my hands on more than 12 open backs. I was surprised how different each sounds. The salesperson told me that if I play bluegrass, I need to avoid a scoop neck. I like your advice- take my time. Right now I am renting a Washburn to learn. |

Oh wow you get to actually go to Elderly Instruments? I shop online there on occasion. Love their "Cheapo Depot"! |

I bought a used Fender from a guy who listed it on craigslist.com. I decided on the Fender because of the price. Not what you were looking for. I have been "playing" for a couple months so there is a long way to go and I'll consider upgrading next year. By then I'll have had time to hear other banjos and try a few to know what I like best. Have fun. |

Elderly Instruments was about a 3 hour drive-but, great fun! The store is in an old building with lots of character. They have so many instruments and are so free to let you try them out. Other store I have been to, I needed permission to touch anything. If you get the opportunity- check it out. |

Had a lesson today. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed after learning slides and pull-offs. My teacher gave me a copy of Cripple Creak-ouch! That seems really difficult. How long did it take for you to play Cripple Creek? |
