Ice Cold... like the economy.

Saturday, November 07, 2009 @3:35:00 AM

This morning is freezing.  Here I sit with a comforter on my lap and just picking some notes on the old banjer.  Working on "Down in the Willow Gardens."  This is my first foray into 3/4 time.

I remember when I had my first apartment.  I was 23 and not yet suffering from OCD.  Just about to.  Well, I have suffered all my life but it hadn't quite eeked into my professional life just yet.  I was working 60 hours a week and making hand over fist.  My apartment cost nothing and we would turn that heat up on the cold New England mornings with little worry about our wallets or the environment.

Oh, how things have changed in my life.

Not working for such a long stretch has made me appreciate things.  The old New England addage of "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without," rings true during these times.  I have found myself doing that more with clothes and left-overs, etc.  I think in some ways it is positive.  I think in some ways it is starting to drive all of us a little nuts.

The constant has been my banjo, and soon mountain dulcimer.  In the spirit of Frank Proffitt I am adding another tool to the woodshed.  Again, an instrument that I can play melodies on.  That seems to be my niche.

Well of to play some tunes (a good friend of mine was kind enough to explain that tunes were songs without the words) and see if I can't outlast this chilly New England morning frost.

Looks like we have a Pilgrim Killing Winter ahead.

It's freezing in Norway too! So you gonna start pickin' the mountain dulcimer, that sounds exciting!
We have a similair instrument in Norway called "langeleik", some say it's been around since the viking age, but oldest one known in Norway is from 1524.

Is it never NOT cold in Norway? I am getting the mountain dulcimer for Christmas and I am pretty excited about it. I think it will help both my understanding of scales and also my ability to read music. I have seen something very similar to the Langeleik on Ebay (and maybe it was one). I definitely think that is one of the places the inspirtation for the mountain dulcimer came from. My grandfather was from Germany originally and had an instrument that looked just like that. So it seems like there is a strong European influence (not much of a surprise) to the mountain dulcimer.

I love these old instruments.

There are a lot of "viking" type markings in rocks and other structures not far from where I live that have brought up the controversy of whether or not the Vikings were actually the first Europeans to America. I wouldn't doubt it with their knowledge of sailing, etc.

It was 70 here today... but you didn't want to hear that!

The "mountain dulcimer" seems to have made its appearance in it's present form in the first half of the 1800's. It's predecessors were most likely that strain of instruments that ThomasW mentioned: the langelik, the scheitholt, and the hummel. I believe it was the Rhineland Germans who brought their scheitholts to American and then down the valley into the Appalachians.

While I've heard of the dulcimer being played with a bow, and many modern dulcimer players finger pick, I think the "tradition", in North Carolina at least, is to use a "noter" on the frets and a goose quill to strum it.

I suspect you'll enjoy it Andy.

I am actually a cold weather person so 70 is a wee bit warm for me. We had 57 here and it was perfect. I love the fall, although this one has been colder than most.

I plan on playing with a noter. Either that or finger dance over the melody string. Nothing fancy. Sorta like my banjo playing.

I was reading up on some Jean Ritchie and she came to the same conclusion as yourself and Thomas that the dulcimer came from Germany and some of those other early european zither like instruments. Pretty interesting.
