FLCW - How's a Shy Person Gonna Survive
Tuesday, November 03, 2009 @6:12:37 AM
I'm reading "The Well Fed Writer", a guide to breaking into Freelance Commercial Writing FLCW. I can definitely do this well. The first screenplay I ever wrote won two film festival gold awards. I've written a book, taught workshops, written grants for millions of dollars and have at least 3 bits of writing that have gone viral. They don't have my byline, but it's nice to know people liked them well enough to swipe them. One skit I wrote has been produced repeatedly on youtube.
TWFW says to succeed as a commercial writer, writing well is not enough. He thinks I should do cold calls.
I'm doomed. Terminally shy people do not do cold calls. Cold calling has been known to cause shy people to stop breathing and flop over on the floor like a freshly boated tuna.
What to do? What to do?
He says if you don't do cold calls, you'll have to be content with less money.
Okay, so what's wrong with that?
I have the perfect face for living in a little shack in the woods. People expect that sort of behavior from grizzled old geezers like me.
Yeah, that's the ticket.
If any of you need a brochure, bit of advertising, commercial script, booklet, direct mail piece, speech written or pithy catch phrase for the head of your banjo, just drop me a note. My rates are currently reasonable. I hope to reach unreasonable during my first year of operation, but, for now, I'm giving deals.

Money is a tool, if you don't need it or perceive a need for it you'll never get it. (The need could be greed or in a shallower gene pool, self worth) But on to cold calling... I find that I am not shy, nor introverted now as I have aged, but once was when I was young and felt unworthy, but believe me I am worthy...(well I now have this as my mantra...sorta) I am not sure if cold calling ( actual cold calling) would be a productive means by which to sell that, which is ,shall we say, intangible. Knocking door to door gets old, I know, I did it for years. You have to be thick skinned and realize that when people tell you NO, it is not personal , but only a rejection of the product ,no matter how personal it is to you the Salesman. Because at that point you are not the creator, you are the sales rep. I have no experience in the literary field but perhaps direct marketing to those places that print would be better suited and e-mail and snail mail work fine for that. However it seems obvious to me that you found your marketing tool, and just need to learn the controls, the fine print as it were, if you have gone viral ...:) I am in a different business and own and run a small retail shop in a small community and have found that being on air is quite productive. I do a live radio show twice a month that and a Yellow book add seem to work for me, for now....but marketing must change and grow as business does. If there is only one thing I can say that may be helpful it is this.... You had better blow your horn, because no one else will... If they do not know you exist, they can't buy from you... I am now contemplating the all- impressive- twenty-foot- high- electric-fan-powered- brightly- colored- flailing- arm- man for my shop as I write this.....hmmmm Wish you the best on the endeavor , Good Luck , Godspeed. I'm hoping there's a way to sell what I do without the soul-searing part. Nobody understands how painful that is to a shy person, except another shy person.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.
