These days I mainly refer to my Cd collection to learn tunes and songs off of. They really are not for entertainment in the normal use of that term. So, I've decided that if a particular Cd is not serving me as such, I should get rid of it and find it a home where it will be appreciated. I just do not like having around so many CDs that I no longer listen to. So, if you want any of these Cds, just contact me and I'll ship them to you free, except for the postage which you can send me later.
All of these CDs are in good shape, to the best of my knowledge, and contain the liner notes. I have not duplicated the the disc or photocopied the notes. All of these artists are highly respected. I just probably do not like their style or find this disc not up to snuff compared to their other work. We all have personal preferences. These are all really good musicians...for the most part. I'll list the somewhat alphabetically and maybe add a word or two as to why I don't like the disc for you to make an evaluation.
This is a first come/first serve situation, and I'd initially like to limit the number of CDs to three per person, at least initially.
BOB BOVEE & GAIL HEIL, RURAL ROUTE 2
PAUL & WIN GRACE AND FAMILY, IN DREAMS I HEAR THE MUSIC: 1993 recording of family band from central Mo.
BILL & LIBBY HICKS, SOUTH OF NOWHERE: Ex-Fuzzy Mtn fiddler teams up with his wife for a so-so album.
HOOVER UPRIGHTS, KNOWN FOR THEIR REPUTATION: This band has won the contest at Clifftop which tells you something about contests. Banjo builder extraordinaire Kevin Enoch is in the band which may have influenced the judges. Mr. Enoch's wife, Kate Brett, is the banjo player and simply stated, she is a joke. The singing on the album is too awful to describe. Dave Rice's fine harmonica cannot keep this ship from sinking, IMHO.
J. E. MAINER'S MOUNTAINEERS, RUN MOUNTAIN: Stringband that was on the divide between Old Time and Bluegrass. 1963 recording.
BILLY MATHEWS, GHOST OF BANJO BILLY: I love Bill'y fiddling, but I'm not too crazy about his clawhammer banjo playing. All tunes here are Billy originals.
NOTHING SEEMS BETTER TO ME, WARNER COLLECTION VOL II: For the serious musicologist. Field recordings that are mere snippets and not enough Frank Proffitt to hold my interest.
OLD TIME BANJO FESTIVAL, PRODUCED BY FINK AND MARXER: Glad I missed this festival! There's some terrible banjo playing for sure on this recording, even more Kate Brett! The two excellent Reed Martin cuts are off of his album! What's up with that?
ORPHEUS SUPERTONES, BOUND TO HAVE A LITTLE FUN: Millner and Koken with Allen and Peterson. I really like Pete Peterson's banjo playing a whole lot, but there's that Clare Millner thing again.
IVAN ROSENBERG, CLAWHAMMER AND DOBRO: Mostly original compositions in a sort of New Agey format.
SONG LINKS, ENGLISH TRADITIONAL SONGS AND THEIR AMERICAN VARIANTS. DOUBLE CD: Alright all you folk song scholars...
JODY STECHER AND KATE BRISLIN, A SONG THAT WILL LINGER: This extremely talented couple managed to wreck a bunch of fine songs here.
RAFE STEFANINI, HELL AND SCISSORS: I think this was Rafe's 1st album. I have two of his more recent albums that I like a lot, but I don't like any of the 20 cuts on this recording. Full stringband with many notable musicians.
DAN TATE, FIELD RECORDERS' COLLECTIVE: Not impressed. Only FRC Cd that I've not liked.
VOCALION LABEL, CLASSIC OT MUSIC: Reissue of 23 cuts from Vocalion 78s.
So, there you have it. You might find something you like, and you can't beat the price!
