I took a 5/8 x 1 x 3 block of wood and drew 5 lines on the 1" face representing the string spacing I prefer. With the line side up, I put this block in place of the bridge. I then take a fastener we use on lobster traps called a hog-ring (a C shaped clip around 1/16" dia.) The C shape makes it easy to hold onto. With the banjo strung up and the block in place of the bridge, I get the hog-ring hooked under the 3rd string which is lined up with the middle line on the block. Now I start playing the third string open then fretted at the 12th fret and playing the 12th fret harmonic frequently checking the open note on the tuner to stay 0. By sliding the hog-ring along the middle line on the block I shorten or lengthen the 3rd string until the open note and the 12th fret note and the 12th harmonic are all 0 on the tuner. When everythings at zero I mark where the hog-ring contacts the line on the block. Same for all strings and this was the pattern that emerged. I then drilled that pattern into an old credit card for a template. Now I can take a "white-out" pen and easily mark my stock. The feet are concentric to the rim. Jimmy Cox got me thinking of crooked feet again.I carved a lignum vitae bridge once with feet like this;it was nice and slippery for the tuners but not a good tonewood. The maple is 175 year old barn floor and the notes and chords are very warm and sweet.
